Meet James Douglas of Little Swimsters Swim School in Pearland

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Douglas.

Thanks for sharing your story with us James. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been around the water for a great part of my life that I can remember. Growing up in California, days were always spent at family members houses lounging around the pool or taking trips with my grandpa riding on the boat and jet skis, but nonetheless, near the water. I joined the swim team at a young age and continued through high school and my first job was a lifeguard. Naturally, the next step following would be to teach individuals a life-saving skill and what brings me so much joy. While I continued on that path, I worked for a national corporation; never in a million years did I think I’d start Little Swimsters. After being with them for nearly two years, I took a leap of faith and ventured out on my own, starting with one swimmer and have grown larger than I could’ve ever thought possible.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! There have been several struggles, but without them, I don’t think we’d be where we are today. The biggest struggle we’ve faced as a small business swim school is finding space. It’s not as simple as just walking into your community pool and taking over. Finding a facility that will be suitable for lessons, as well as an establishment that will let us host our swim lesson program on their premises is much harder than it sounds. We have gone the extra mile to provide extraordinary lessons for our swimmers.

Please tell us about Little Swimsters Swim School – what should we know?
In short, we provide year-round swimming lessons. We offer lessons for all individuals from beginner to advanced starting at six months. We teach swimmers water safety skills in and out of the water, as well as traditional swim lessons. We have one of the largest adults and special abilities learn to swim programs in the Houston area. We work with swim teams, homeowner associations, and individuals & families of all sizes. We also provide swim camps throughout the year and offer lifeguards for pool parties and events. We make it convenient for busy adults and work around their schedules, offering mobile lessons to come to their home/neighborhood, if easier, all at an unbeatable price.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Patience is key for me both inside and outside of the water. If you ask any of my clients (parents) how they would describe me, number one is always patient. I teach mostly kids and just like adults, they have good days and bad day; just because they learned and did one skill perfectly on Tuesday doesn’t mean they will do the same during there next lesson on Thursday. I try to teach everyone to think of swimming lesson as you do grade school; you spend weeks focusing on one objective before master it. Some pick up different skills faster than others, but it still takes time. Trying to rush through things and not being patient, you won’t get the best results.
