Meet Joshua Kaskin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Kaskin.

Joshua, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My art chose me. I’m Kodak, a Poet/Artist.

In elementary school, I’d draw human and animal figures in class; funny things is; most of my peers couldn’t doodle stick figures.

My mom would fill my coloring box with multiple crayons, in class, I’d imitate wrestling sounds and moves with them. My imagination was and always have been something I’ve allowed to bring joy and entertainment to myself as well as others.

I played sports ever since I was able to walk (football and a little basketball). Granted, I wasn’t as great as I would have liked to be, still, my dedication kept me driven. Even when I was kicked off of the Hoffman MS Football Team, for failing art. My vortex leads me into the art class to ask Mr. Dupnic for one more shot at the watercolor painting. He gave me a chance but refused to re-teach the concept.

It was as if the brushes chose its own angles on the canvas. At that moment, mixing water and paint became second nature.

Finally passing that class, the artist followed me throughout high school.

I continued playing football, as well, that was until age seventeen. I fractured my leg playing football at Eisenhower HS.

I continued to experience with numerous styles of art throughout my pain, here is it where love for poetry found me. My high school supported when I returned to campus. Students would spread the word that everyone should “… hear that new poem Kaskin got.”

My first two show was at Big Ike’s Talent Show nearly two-thousand students and parents in the audience. I had to get over being nervous quickly before my performance because it was just me, one mic, one stage, talking to my peers!

I conquered it like a champ!

Leading to my English teacher encouraging me to watch poets and live performances on YouTube, instead of the class assignment. Throughout school teachers would pull me into their class to perform for their students.
Graduating to Texas Southern University, I learned how to create and build strong relationships for a solid foundation.

I have a daughter now (Ta’Nai Kaskin), new friends, like-minded peers, and a career that took off like a rocket! I Learned that I can host, act, write, paint, compete and be a father! Opportunities come to me, my peer always help me get to my next goal, everything in my path is there to encourage and uplift me. I love what I do and who I am.
I am so happy and grateful now that my career is what I love, being me.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has been smooth overall, but who doesn’t run into a few potholes in Houston or in life. I enjoy learning from life’s experiences. Life is beautiful and amazing.
