Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Garza.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I can remember making art as long as I can remember. Basically, my first sketchbook was a spiral journal and I would draw the most random things a kid would think about. As I grew older, so did my passion and commitment to get better as an artist. Art has always been a place for me to find peace. Naturally, I was gifted, but I still had room for improvement. I never had a lot of art supplies and would only use them when I had too. Slowly building my supplies, I was able to create better pieces. With the support of loved ones and the mindset I had, I was able to get to where I am today. I’m still not satisfied with where I am and there’s still a long road ahead to cement my legacy.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been smooth. It’s been a roller coaster of a ride with lots of ups and downs to this. There’s not a map to show you where to go. You just jump in and learn along the way. I’ve struggled with selling pieces or even get commissioned for weeks and months. You start to question if your art is good or if your prices are fair. Sometimes, you just want to stop everything. However, these little things shouldn’t take away the love and passion I have with creating pieces. I love my art because it’s a part of me and so I love myself. I value my art and see all the work behind it and if one person doesn’t see that then another person will. It’s all about being patient. It can take a long time, but it’s gonna be alright. Another thing has been the times I don’t hang out with friends and families because I’m always working on a piece for hours. The more I get myself into this, the more I feel isolated from everyone else. You just need to find balance that suits you best.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m an artist/designer. I specialize in mix media art, painting, and graphic designs. I’m known for my expressive pieces that include different people, animals, and objects that tell a story about what I see through my eyes. What sets me apart from the rest is that I’m honest and the real thing. I’m not a copy. I try to open people’s eyes to what’s new and intriguing.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think success can depend vastly on who you ask. For me, I feel successful if my pieces are able to communicate with other people and share the same feelings towards that piece. Everything else will come along the way.
