Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry Kelm.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Bolts ‘n Nuts Plus has been located in the Houston area since 1970. The name was modified from Bolts ‘n Nuts shortly after being purchased by Larry W. Kelm in 1996. It has operated out of the same North Houston location since 1996.
Although the company name has been modified slightly, the building and land where the company operates has been a mainstay since its purchase by Mr. Kelm. To the untrained eye the facilities look about the same although significant upgrades have been made to the computer systems that are used to operate the companies. Three different increasingly sophisticated computer systems have been installed since the purchase. These upgrades and the implementation of a new web site, www.boltsplus.com, have increased operating efficiencies tremendously and facilitated the successful business strategies that are currently guiding the business.
One of the core strategies has been to hire talented people from the Aldine / Humble quadrant of the Houston area so that the local community can identify with and relate to us as mutually dependent good neighbors. We appreciate the diverse nature of this area of Houston and embrace its culture fully.
Bolts ‘n Nuts Plus is an Industrial Distributor of primarily Fasteners, but we also sell Fittings, Tools and Shop Supplies to our customers. Our customers are located both locally and internationally. Our web presence is being felt throughout the United States and continues to expand business opportunities for us. We are a relatively small business that deals effectively with very large national and international corporations.
Has it been a smooth road?
Life in small businesses is very seldom a smooth road. We have met numerous business challenges from customer bankruptcies; implementing several iterations of increasing sophisticated business software packages; employee turnover to find the right employees and numerous challenges from very strong competitors in the Industrial Fastener industry. However, through all of the challenges, although sometimes stressful, we have emerged as a stronger competitor.
