Meet Denisha Hardeman of The UnHushed Charity Foundation in Pearland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denisha Hardeman.

Denisha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was a victim of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault in college. After doing my first movie gig, “Django Unchained,” I was inspired to move to Los Angeles from talking to the legendary, Samuel L. Jackson. After moving to LA and getting my foot in the door with filming and writing, I realized I had a platform to speak and help those in need. I wrote my first best selling book, “8 Lanes” about my experience as a survivor. It granted me the opportunities to speak at schools and at events. I decided to start the B.O.S.S (Beauty of Survival Stories) Fashion Show that gives Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault a chance to get a makeover and walk the runway before sharing their stories to the audience. They are then given donations and it is always a beautiful event.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I have went into debt funding the fashion show on my own. I have had many sleepless nights, last minute drop outs, cancellations on the day of the fashion show, rejections and so much more. But I was always told if the reward is greater than the risk, then it’s worth it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The UnHushed Charity Foundation – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am known for my B.O.S.S Charity Fashion Show being more than an average fashion show! To have survivors get a makeover and walk the runway to share their stories take bravery. But not everyone wants to give survivors a platform to speak. I’m known for bringing this platform and really caring about survivors all over. I will go to the end of the earth to make sure these events go well. We are curating events such as Confidence dance classes to further help survivors and those going through depression.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the love Houston gives everyone! To Houston, I am really a star on the rise. To leave and follow my dreams, it is amazing! So Houston truly supports those from the city making moves. We’re southern, that’s what we do. I wish Houston had more of a film community though. It is growing, but it could be bigger if everyone worked together.
