Today we’d like to introduce you to Misty Campbell.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Misty. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been a freelance wardrobe stylist for several years now, however, it wasn’t until 2018, I decided to turn it into a business. My personal journey into the fashion world started with my experience working as a model with the Neal Hamil modeling agency here in Houston back in 2005. My modeling opportunities would lend me to lots of promotional modeling, print work, short films, and music videos. More times than none, for auditions and casting calls, clients would give us a guideline for what they wanted us to wear and left us to create our own looks within those parameters. I found that this came naturally to me and would often help my model peers coordinate their looks as well. While I have always been into looking my best at all times, becoming a model would foster the passion to stretch my creativity into looks that would really stand out and gain me the infamous title of “fashionista.” I eventually left the modeling scene to focus on raising my two amazing kids, now 16 and 12. Both of my children also ended up in modeling and I would soon find myself styling them as well for casting calls, fashion shows, and gigs. Today, my business is growing steady with wardrobe and fashion styling opportunities that span from working with music artists, models, public figures and other driven entrepreneurial women like myself and I couldn’t be happier.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle for me was actually making the decision to do fashion and wardrobe styling as a business. We often mistake our talents for just that… talents and not necessarily a means to make a life. With the support and encouragement of my family, close friends, and work colleagues I stepped out on faith and outside of my comfort zone, towards working on something that I could one day leave to my children. While business is starting off at a healthy and steady pace, I find that other struggles have come from the learning curves around establishing an e-friendly business model as well as enhancing my social media presence. With technology constantly changing and new platforms for marketing on the rise, I find that I have to be abreast of what’s out there technologically so that I can continue to serve my clients more effectively. My line of business is a very personal encounter with my customers however when it comes to monetary transactions and marketing, my clients would like to interact with the push of a button. Adjustments to these types of business changes require that I stay continually learning and quick to adopt.
My advice to other women would be to first, step out of your comfort zone and go after your dreams no matter how big or small. You don’t want to one day look up and say you never even tried to go after your passions to see where it would take you. Second, I would advise other women to do what I’ve done recently and join an organization or group that supports entrepreneurs and or small business owners. There are so many organizations that can provide resources (a lot of times free of charge) to help enable you to successfully get your business off the ground. These organizations can provide resources and tools for managing the logistics of business like filing taxes, obtaining LLC’s, marketing, legal requirements and so on. Last piece of advice, the road to success is not easy, as we have all heard. The biggest investment you should make in your business should be in your personal self-care, physically, spiritually, emotionally and mentally. It will be imperative that you forgive your mistakes, learn from them and correct them as you move forward in your journey of entrepreneurship.
We’d love to hear more about 3012 Fashion Ave.
I am a wardrobe and fashion stylist, personal shopper and closet organizer. I help women from all walks of life find their personal style through exploring their vision of how they see themselves fashionably and bring that vision to life. My styling services consist of a one-on-one consultation in which I dive into what makes up my clients style today, how they would like their style to change and review specific budgets for creating their new image. I specialize in guiding women to styles and trends that take their current style to a new and exciting level.
I am most proud of my ability to reawaken a love for style and help women to once again believe in the joy that can be found in fashion. What sets me apart from other stylist is the range of diverse women I am able to style. From public figures, music artist, models, to the stay at home mom who needs to step up her date night wardrobe, each women comes with a style challenge that I have yet not to rise to.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I feel that media coverage that focuses on challenges that women face today actually shines a light on the need and importance for the presence of women to be more visible in roles that have traditionally been left to men. There is now an emphasis on the need for women to be put in positions of power and influence to create change and inspire others. Leadership roles for women have now been extended from government to corporate America. Social media has played a huge part in expanding the traditional roles of stay at home moms and have placed entrepreneurship opportunities right at their fingertips, allowing them to do virtual mass marketing and sales from their home. Now with women rising to influential platforms, we are able to hear our stories of challenges brought to the attention of everyone and to those who are in the position to impact change regarding them. I truly believe that this day and time is a better time for women to step into those positions we are qualified for and continue to inspire the generations of women that will come behind us.
