Meet Laurie Coton of Coton House

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurie Coton.

Laurie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After a career in pharmaceutical sales and sales management, I decided I really needed to do something that I was more passionate about. After some soul searching, I realized all along that I have enjoyed houses and furnishings. As a child, I loved going to open houses and new neighborhoods. My dollhouse and the furnishings were another joy. So, I embarked on getting a degree in interior design. While at it, I also studied architecture. Upon graduation, I had a child so plans changed somewhat. To capitalize on what I loved doing and my new skills, I started purchasing homes in my neighborhood to renovate and flip. It made sense to get my real estate license so I could represent myself and my talents to their best. After working for several real estate agencies in various capacities including being the Managing Broker for a boutique firm and while having my own design studio, I decided to go off on my own and start Coton House. It is a full-service agency offering realty, design and remodel. Currently, we have 23 agents and cover buying, selling, leasing, relocation, first time home buyers and any services needed for a home.

Has it been a smooth road?
Coton House has been in existence for less than nine months. In that short period of time, we have grown exponentially. With that growth, there are, of course, many needs. The largest challenge is juggling so many balls–internal systems, advertising, agent needs, events, personnel, to name a few… everything is new so there is no set in stone past recipe for protocols. I am blessed to have a wonderful staff and team that keeps me on my toes with great ideas, daily needs and a great sense of humor.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Coton House – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are all about the relationship, not only with our clients but amongst our team.  Coton House members work together as the strength of the team is each member.

Coton House offers realty, design and remodeling services. Having these capabilities allows us to benefit anyone in any aspect of the home process; builders with finish selections, sellers with advice on how to ready the property, renovations that will benefit with a sale, space planning for paint and furniture selections after the sale. Other agencies don’t offer these services under one roof. I am on the Board of ASID and have had a design practice for over 20 years. With real estate, I’m active with the HAR board, and belong to several groups including HIREBA and GHBA.

Also, we are known for truly working together as a team. The Coton House members know that the strength of each member is the team.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Being a native Houstonian, I truly enjoy seeing the positive changes that have taken place in the city. Not only being incredibly diverse with the people but through philanthropic efforts of our community. There are so many more beautiful areas where people can enjoy the outdoors, art and cultural events, an amazing food scene, great sports teams, redevelopment of previously lesser used areas…

Like everyone else, I’m not thrilled about the traffic or the heat, but there’s too much good that tips the scales.
