Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Malone.
Natasha, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
So, I’ve always been interested in entrepreneurship and helping others. When I was 16 years old, I started my first business, which introduced me to the industry. It wasn’t until I got to college at Texas Southern University that I began assisting others with their resumes and professional development. It started off as me just proof-reading resumes for others before they submitted their applications for scholarships & internships. Soon after, I noticed that I’d see the same mistakes over and over within resumes from different students around the University. From there I developed several outlines and began doing resume revisions for students within the School of Business. Overtime, more and more students began to come to me for assistance with their resumes so during my last semester of college I started NRM Consulting. When asked why consulting, I always tell people that it’s because I’m able to do something I love, while helping people at the same time. Consulting allows me to help my clients perfect their professional development.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I had guidance from my mentors and Line sisters along the way, which made starting my consulting company pretty smooth. For many years, I did consulting around my college campus for free. At that time, I didn’t even realize that I was “consulting.” I just looked at it as helping the next person out. Over time, I developed a passion for it. My advice for anyone getting started in their particular field or particular craft would be these six steps: 1) Not all nights are gonna be easy, some nights you might feel like giving up or even question if this is the path for you. KEEP GOING 2) Don’t do it for money, do it because it makes you happy. The money will come. 3) Understand the importance of customer service. Sometimes, it’s not about the product, but the way you made your customer feel. If the customer is happy with the experience you gave them, they will continue to come back and will refer you to ALL of their friends. 🙂 4) Don’t expect success to happen overnight, continue to perfect your craft and work hard 5) focus on the importance of strategic branding, many people on the market probably offer the same product as you, what makes YOURS stand out? 6) Enjoy the process. I read an article once about successful people and the one thing that they said they regretting the most was being focused so much on the success that they forgot to enjoy the journey getting there. So, ENJOY IT. Enjoy those late nights and early mornings, enjoy the lessons you earn and enjoy the people you meet along the way.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about NRM Consulting – what should we know?
NRM Consulting focuses on Professional Branding:
I provided: resumes, cover letters, linked in profile updates, sample follow up email drafts, and professional development consulting. What sets me apart from other consultants is that I focus on the end-user experience. I want to make sure that all my customers are satisfied from start to finish. I also keep in touch with all my clients pertaining to their job successes once I’ve completed their personal development files.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The worst thing that you can hear is no. My mentors and mentees have all played a vital role in my success. When I have questions or am unsure about a personal or professional move, my mentors are always one call away. 9 times out of 10 your mentors have already been through what you’re going through and can provide you with helpful insight. My mentees on the other hand always keep me on my toes. Having them around reminds me to keep moving forward because I know that they are watching.
Overall, I would highly recommend finding a mentor. Sometimes, you just need someone around that isn’t a family member to listen and give you advice.
