Meet Tosandra Carter of Loc’d in Beauty in West Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tosandra Carter.

Tosandra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started purely by accident, honestly. I was working as a Turbine Mechanic. With that industry having its ups and downs, I had to find another source of income to tie me over til work was available again. I had Traditional locs and did them myself until they became hard to get under my hard hat. I cut them and had a bald fade till my hair grew out. While still working as a Turbine Mechanic, life threw its trials and tribulations my way. My daughter has only seen me in locs and asked why don’t I get them again. I was reluctant till she showed me Sisterlocks. Yes, my eight years old daughter introduced me…lol. So I did my research and finally found someone to establish my sisterlocks. Now, I had a texturizer on my hair at the time so the Sisterlock Consultant held off for about six months of establishing my Sisterlocks. We talked and got to know each other better, I was questioning her about braiding and the natural hair industry. Not realizing she was interviewing me the whole time.

Finally, I was established. I would come in for my retights and we would speak on the industry I was in and how it was not dependable and I needed to find another source of income. She suggested going to the Sisterlock Class. As usual, I was reluctant. I worked for her doing washing and retights, build up my funds to pay for the class. Took the class in Baton Rouge and have not looked back. At the beginning, it was hard. I veered away from my mentor to start on my own. I was doing Sisterlocks and working a part-time job to make ends meet. Hurricane Harvey hit in 2017. After that, I had to step out on faith and take this Sisterlock full-time. I can do it from home and still have and eye on my daughter and progress. I worked for a year from home and it was time to move to a space. Found a salon suite close to home and the rest is history. My clients are my family, they have been with me through the good, bad and the ugly. I love what I do. Having a business is hard work, you will lose, gain and remain with people. I do my best to surround myself with positive people. Being in Katy, TX it seems that I am the best kept secret.

Has it been a smooth road?
Struggles along the way was getting clientele. Learning the craft. I went to Georgia, Maryland, Louisiana and a few other places just to learn the craft of locs. Like styling, maintenance and color of locs. I went to hair shows, networked, took classes online and met some wonder people in the industry along the way. Getting that stand out logo was a hard struggle. My clients helped with that. Finding out what makes me unique. It may be customer service, styling, color, just the passion of the craft.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Loc’d in Beauty – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My business maintains locs. Sisterlocks, Brotherlocks, Traditional locs and interlocks. I specialize in Sisterlocks. I am most proud of how far I have come. I believe my passion sets me apart. I have learned from others of what not to do. Your time slot is your time slot. I do not overbook. When someone gets established, lunch is on me for the days they are in my chair. These people are investing in their hair, the least I can do is buy lunch. My customer service is my focus. I may not please all, yet I know I would want to be treated.
