Today we’d like to introduce you to Skye Terrell.
Skye, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In second grade, when my dreams to be an ice cream truck driver fell through, I decided that I would switch my focus to become an architect. That also had a slight change in plans, but my desire to design and create art stayed strong. I graduated from The PVAMU in 2014 with a bachelors in both Architecture and Construction Science. I immediately began working as a project manager overseeing ground up construction projects worth over $150M. Even though I enjoyed my job, I didn’t feel fulfilled artistically. I started creating a few art pieces for some close friends in my spare time and then shortly after Sawdust & Glitter was birthed!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road at all. My first platform for Sawdust & Glitter was a step by step how-to blog. Working full time and trying to keep my blog updated, while still maintaining a social life was strenuous. After about two years of blogging, I retired my paintbrushes so that I could focus on my 9-5. Just recently though, I’ve brought Sawdust & Glitter back via Instagram @sawdust_andglitter!
Sawdust & Glitter – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I go back and forth on how to describe what it is that I do. Honestly a little bit of this and a lot of that. I repurpose random articles into new found art, paint, landscape, decorate, create memorabilia, etc. You name it and I can do it or find a way to do it. Long story short, I specialize in art, design, and interior/exterior consulting.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I recently just built my first home in the Pearland area. Coming from an artistic background of architecture and construction, I had a blast picking all of my finishes for my new home. I even experimented with xeriscaping my backyard, which was a huge project that I managed to tackle by myself. Definitely one of my toughest and longest projects, but my proudest moment thus far.
