Today we’d like to introduce you to Cammi Garrett.
Cammi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started taking photos of my friends and classmates for school projects. I ended up loving it so much I decided to continue doing so even after the classes had finished. The people I would shoot would rave about how much they loved the photos, but also how comfortable I made them feel in front of the camera. They have fun during the photoshoots. It’s not just something they do, it’s something they enjoy doing. It was something I enjoyed doing. So after a few photoshoots with some friends, their friends wanted me to take their photos. Then those photos caught the eye of their friends, and so on, and so on. After one graduation photoshoot, I was approached by “The Voyage Houston”. I was in one of their local artist articles. And now, here I am telling my story.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been a few struggles, I’m not gonna lie. For instance, when I first started, I wanted to get paid shoots right away. I wanted to be noticed for my work right off the bat. So when that didn’t happen, it felt a little discouraging. But, I knew that the road wasn’t an easy one. Things would take time, and eventually I would get to where I wanted to be. I also dealt with a sort of writer’s block. I would have periods where I just wasn’t inspired. There was nothing new in my work. It was just the same kind of image and feeling in what I was producing. I learned to find ways to become inspired–to find inspiration. I learned that I needed to go experience more of life’s great things. I went to more music performances, more social events in my area, and I eventually found my inspiration again. Sometimes all you need is a little patience and a new perspective.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Rose Studios story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a photographer. I do mostly portrait work, so I work a lot with people. I take photos for family events, wedding photos, and individual shots. In my work, I find that every person is unique. I know that sounds really cheesy, but it is true. Every person is interesting in their own way. I like to work with my models until they feel comfortable with me. I understand that being in front of a camera with the sole purpose of getting your picture taken can be kind of nerve racking. It makes a lot of people feel anxious. So I like to help them feel comfortable with me and that helps them to relax and have fun. When this happens, I get the best shots. I get the ones that show your true self, the unique, and interesting person you are.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Personally, I don’t believe in luck–or coincidences. I believe that if you see something happening in your life that may feel like luck or a coincidence, it’s just you hearing opportunity knocking at your door. The tricky part is being able to notice that it is opportunity that is knocking. You just have to keep your eyes open for it. You never know what form it may take, so you don’t want to be close-minded on what it may look like. In that sense, take every opportunity that comes your way. Don’t turn it down just because it doesn’t look like what you thought it should be. You don’t want to regret not taking the chance when you could have.
