Today we’d like to introduce you to Tobi Idowu.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tobi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It all started a year ago just about, and my sister was telling me how she an opportunity to host her own radio show. Of course, I was excited for her, being that this is something new. So on her first day, I went with her to the radio show to show support and the next thing I know I am her first time guest on her radio show with her.
Now, fast forward to a year later and some months, from a name change of La’ Noir to The 3ree, I became a first time guest to a co-host. I guess being at the right place at the right time does open new doors and opportunities.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The only struggle that I would have to say that I deal with on a consistent basis is just me being able to come out of my shell and step out of my comfort zone. It’s great to be able to be given a space where I can say what is on my mind and be able to have conversations about the good, the bad, and the foolery that happens in our world today. However, that is just the easy part, when it comes to the interviews and the red carpets and the events, now that is where the challenge is. Me being a shy and a loner you would say versus me being in an area where I have to mix and socialize with other people is the exact opposite of what my private life is like. Even though it is something different for me, I still take this challenge to be able to push me out of my safe space and be able to go from the loner to someone who is not afraid to be at a social event or talk to new people or just putting myself out there and not being afraid of the feedback or the perception that people may have of me.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The 3ree Radio Show story. Tell us more about the business.
So has I stated earlier I am the co-host of The 3ree. The show focuses on Afrobeat music as well as American music, and entertainment, and of course the main part of the show which is when the tea is brought up and that is when the show really gets started. The tea of the show is really “The Meat” of the show because the tea can be just about anything from relationships, to politics, to just downright foolishness. Of course, there are special opportunities when we are able to have a guest that comes on the show which is a wide range. It could be an up and coming artist or an artist that has already made a name for themselves, to those who work behind the scenes such as directors, to even comedians. But what sets us apart from other radio shows besides the fact of having different personalities on the show, which mean different opinions and different perspectives, is that we focus on the cultural part of our show which will be the African part of our show. The show is used to be able to shed more light and attention on up and coming African artist from places such as Nigeria and Ghana to name a few. Also just being able to add the Nigerian flavor to our show. I am just proud of how far the show has come, and being able to cross paths of different people, and being able to showcase new and raw talent.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
God deserves all the credit because I mean honestly if it wasn’t God then who else. Of course the Host, Tumi, who just gave me the opportunity to be able to be apart of something, that I would have never thought that I would be something like this. Also, DJ Oreo, who has been the DJ of the show and has been the only male of the trio, and has been putting in that work when it comes to the music part of the show. Lastly, the boss, the person, who likes to remain anonymous, given us the opportunity to just being able to have a show on his station. He has been a huge help and a mentor, especially when it comes to red carpet events, and just giving me that nudge I need when I feel too scared to step out of my comfort zone.
