Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathleen Buys.
Kathleen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I went to a Fine Arts School in Savannah Georgia, Savannah College of Art and Design where I received a BFA in Painting. I love SCAD because our foundations were so broad and I learned about many different mediums. With that education, I have been able to apply my skills and knowledge to my artwork and, ultimately, my business. I have continued to create, even when pieces aren’t being sold. I find the more I practice, the better I become. Also, the process takes a lot of self-reflecting. If something isn’t selling, there is a reason. Know your audience and accept criticism, and be open to change.
I find my business today is mostly commission-based, which I love. It is so fun to walk a client through their idea for a piece and see their excitement when I deliver a finished product. I also have been fortunate enough to sell pieces in an Interiors store in the River Oaks area. Walking into a beautiful space and seeing my work displayed with such care is exciting and exhilarating.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road; still isn’t. Sales aren’t steady enough for me to not have a full-time job as well. I teach High School art during the school year. This allows me freedom both after school, and in the summer to focus on K Buys Art.
Please tell us about K Buys Art.
I am an independent artist specializing in oil paintings, watercolor paintings, graphite drawings, and more recently, jewelry. I am probably most known for my oil paintings of Texas native birds. I am proud of my company’s success, not only financially, but also with customer satisfaction. I almost always bring my clients to tears of happiness upon delivering their custom pieces. That is an amazing feeling.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was in High School attending Memorial Senior High I was asked to paint a backdrop for the school play Les Meserables. I felt special, talented, and excited! This experience catapulted me into my artistic path.
