Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Whitley.
Leah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I first became interested in breastfeeding after the birth of my oldest daughter. I wanted to breastfeed but was completely unprepared for the challenges before me. After much frustration I contacted a professional who came to my home and helped me. That visit was a lifesaver and I was able successfully breastfeed my daughter long term. Shortly after that experience I made the decision to change careers and became a board certified Lactation Consultant. I knew that I wanted to provide women and families with the support and care they need to reach their breastfeeding goals.
Has it been a smooth road?
Every entrepreneurial venture has its set of challenges. SOS Lactation is no exception. When I made the decision to go into private practice I knew it would require a great deal of time organizing and executing. As a wife and mother of three girls finding the time and energy to work on this venture was no small feat. Many days turn into long nights working while my girls are asleep. It is a constant and exciting challenge to successfully juggle the daily responsibilities.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with SOS Lactation – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I created SOS Lactation to provide immediate professional breastfeeding support to new mothers. Breastfeeding is an extremely rewarding, but difficult endeavor. Especially in the beginning. As a lactation consultant, I provide mothers with the information and hands-on support they need to successfully breastfeed their babies. When a mother is in pain with sore damaged nipples, exhausted from sleep deprivation, and unable to satisfy her crying hungry baby, emotions run high and the stress level goes through the roof. Women need someone they can trust. An appointment to be seen by a Lactation Consultant in 2 or 3 days is often far too late. That mother needs help immediately. I have met many skilled consultants over the years that do not have a personality most people would feel comfortable confiding in. In Houston we have many large organizations with skilled consultants, but they are not easy to access or readily available for appointments. There are other organizations that are responsive, but lack the skill and knowledge needed to effectively assist mothers with complex breastfeeding issues. SOS Lactation proudly provides all three by an experienced and skilled board certified lactation consultant who is also a friend in the comfort of your own home.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the diversity of Houston. There are so many different types of people with diverse backgrounds. The cultures, festivals, and various restaurants and food trucks provide a unique and rich environment to live and learn in. I have to ability to meet and help people from all walks of life which keeps my days interesting and different. I don’t like the fact that it takes about 30 min to get most places.

Way to go Leah, I wished I’d had help such as you provide…maybe my children would have become more high touch people.
