Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacci Jackson.
Jacci, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a child, I loved to dress up; and realized early on that I had a discerning eye for fashion. I viewed clothing as a form of art. But instead of paint on a canvas, it was interchangeable fabrics on a body, that reflected the individual’s unique style & personality. I attribute this gift to one of the great hidden fashion icons in my family – Magnolia Ruth King. She was a top couturier & created silk designs that flourished in the early 1950s. She designed for the Supremes, Sammy Davis Jr., Mae West and other Hollywood stardom.
During college, I worked as an assistant for a celebrity stylist. After graduating with a degree in Business Management I set my sights on a career in fashion. I worked closely under the mentorship of celebrity stylists and designers. I have worked behind the scenes & appeared in segments of Great Day Houston’s the Deborah Duncan Show and the Wendy Williams Show.
I spend my time between New York & Houston; and am the owner & creative director, of Magnolia Silks, a clothing & accessory boutique that pays tribute to my great aunt, Magnolia Ruth.
Has it been a smooth road?
The fact that the fashion industry is so saturated, not to mention the fact that designs & trends change so rapidly, has been a struggle. I have to stay focused on being open-minded, embrace changes; and constantly have to work to differentiate myself.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Magnolia Silks – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Magnolia Silks creates garments that are high fashion but are at an affordable price point. We want all women to feel beautiful because they are. But we are most proud of our charitable efforts. We’ve hosted sip & shops at luxury shops in New York City to benefit breast cancer awareness & other charitable organizations. We recently hosted our back to school backpack drive benefiting GIRLS Inc. of greater Houston.
I often refer back to some quotes that keep me focused on the concept of giving more:
True success begins the second you start giving back.
It sometimes seems effortless to give by while doing what I love to do – create designs.
So, at Magnolia Silks, we will ‘think of giving not as a duty, but as a privilege’.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Houston’s diversity & absolutely love our foods! Hands down we have some of the best food in the country! Also, we are known for our friendliness & hospitality. When I am away, these are the things that I miss most.
From a fashion industry perspective, the city has many possibilities for brands or start-up companies, if only we would connect our resources in order to lay the groundwork for a strong entrepreneurial foundation. Houston has the potential to be the next fashion capital.
