Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Gurley.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We found floatation therapy as a means of helping to cope with major stresses from our jobs. The amount of stress we struggled with daily was starting to affect our personal lives so we tried multiple things and really fell in love with the simplicity and effectiveness of Floatation Therapy. The only problem was, there wasn’t anywhere near us to routinely enjoy it! At that time there was only one other location in Houston to experience this and it was on the other side of town and not located in a commercial center. So we decided that more people need access to this in their lives, now more than ever.
Once we made the decision to bring a commercial float center to Houston we had to educate ourselves on all the elements needed to bring a company to life, and over the course of about 18months we’ve gone from a passionate idea focused on helping people to having a premier float center that our clients can come to as a personal retreat to reset, recharge, and refocus. Our clients leave happier and more centered than when they came in, and we like to think that when they interact positively with people after floating, there’s a knock on affect that spreads this positive calming energy outward.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like most roads worth taking, there’s been a fair share of bumps. The biggest challenges we’ve faced were mostly related to finding a location that would work for our clients and then the myriad of lessons learned around space design, architecture, construction build out, permits…etc. Ironically this process was one of the most stressful periods of our lives, all while trying to bring the perfect stress free experience to our community!
During these struggles, we started to develop our initial followers and early supporters in the area. Through GREAT patience and support, we were finally able to open the center that we really wanted to give our clients, and they’ve let us know just how much they enjoy the space.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our entire business is focused on providing an absolutely stress free experience for our clients to simply unplug and re-center themselves by utilizing state of the art Floatation Cabins along with an overall calm energy found throughout our space.
In today’s society the average person is absolutely inundated with stimulus from before the time they awake until they are finally asleep. Just about every minute of the day we are hearing beeps, getting notifications from social media, vibrating phones, traffic lights…..all of it adds up to being continually assessing and judging our surroundings. This behavior essentially puts us into a continuous flight or fight mode for most of our waking hours.
At Infinity Float Center we utilize sensory deprivation cabins to separate us from these thousands of bits of stimulus vying for our attention. In our cabins you’ll find about 10 inches of water that is saturated with 1300 pounds of Epsom Salts, which in addition to the many benefits already associate with Epsom Salts, also allows client to float absolutely effortlessly because of the density of the water. This wonderful Epsom Salt solution is also warmed to a ‘skin receptor neutral’ temperature (about 93.5F) which helps to disassociate the mind from the body while floating, so pretty soon you lose sense of what’s above water and what’s below water. Added to this sensation of peaceful floating, the cabins are sound proof as well as light proof so your body gets to relax in a way that you haven’t experienced since the womb.
Each of our float suites have their own private shower so after your float session you can shower off and revel in the silky smoothness of your skin while you reacclimatize to the outside world in one of our two lounges. We’ll also have a variety of hot teas available for you to sip on and relax. You’re welcome to stay as long as you like and read some of the literature we have around, color in some Zen doodle books, or just sit back and reflect on how good you feel.
At IFC we also provide everything you need for your sessions like towels, robes, shampoos and soaps, as well as hair dryers combs…etc. All you need to do is show up and relax!
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Pearland, TX and was very active and enjoyed spending time outside with friends or just exploring new areas by myself. I was, and still am, a voracious reader of a wide variety of subjects from complete fiction to hard core science all the way through mindfulness and self-improvement, and everything in between.
My interests varied growing up but mostly focused around the sciences, nature, and animals. I always enjoyed learning new things and still like to widen my world view whenever possible.
