Meet Jasmine Moultrie of Jas Blooms Calligraphy in Southwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Moultrie.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jasmine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started practicing modern calligraphy as a hobby. After I started posting my work, I began taking orders from friends and family in 2017. I’ve always been creative, making signs for family events and crafting projects, so I felt starting my own business was a good idea.

At first I was overwhelmed because I worked a full-time job as a teacher and still took fairly large orders. I work all night to complete calligraphy orders, taught all day, then sponsored a club after school hours- I was drained. I almost let my dream die, but in reality I found a something that combined two things I love: creating things I love and helping others. As much as I tried to scale back from the business I started, I couldn’t! So I took a leap of faith: I quit my career to focus on Jas Blooms Calligraphy full time!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting my calligraphy business definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Entrepreneurship has its own challenges, but the thing I struggled with most is not allowing my business to stifle my creativity. I started calligraphy as a hobby and creative outlet for myself. When I started my business that all changed: I found myself creating things I thought other people would like just to sell products. Only focusing on making a profit was damning to my mental health: I stressed myself out and in the end I resented everything I created. I felt like I had to make money instead of simply enjoying what I do. I also struggled with managing my business expenses and knowing exactly what steps to take to get started. But the thing that no one tells you about entrepreneurship is that a lot of us figure it out along the way. So I started doing the work and trusting the process. It’s still not the smoothest road today, but I’ve gotten more comfortable creating authentic and meaningful work and not having everything figured out all at once.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Jas Blooms Calligraphy – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I create inspirational and abstract artwork, signage, and hand-lettered event items, such has custom envelopes for invitations, gift tags, and place cards. My specialty is calligraphy: give me anything you want to personalize and I’ll customize it for you! I’d say I’m most known for my chalkboards, which most of my customers use for weddings, baby showers, and bridal showers.

I’m most proud of the inspirational decor I create. I use my calligraphy to motivate and encourage healing, spirituality, and growth. The affordability and originality of my work sets me apart. My calligraphy is hand-lettered- not computer generated- so everything I create is one of a kind. No customer will ever have a design that looks exactly like another, so their work is uniquely theirs, not a carbon-copy shared with someone else.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My for the future is growing my business and doing it full time! I’m looking forward to becoming a “staple” business for Houston and the surrounding areas. Soon, I’ll be able to offer packages for events, like wedding packages that include hand-lettered invitation envelopes, two signs, and place cards.
