Meet Megan Salch of Tell Your Tale Marketing & Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Salch.

Megan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have more than 20 years of marketing and communications experience. After working in marketing for a few organizations, I realized I wanted a career that would allow me to balance family and work, while also giving me the opportunity to reach for success without the limits of raises and promotions based on traditional review periods. Being an entrepreneur was a good fit.

I launched Tell Your Tale in 2005 to help organizations communicate effectively about their products and services and the benefits. While I initially worked out of my home with the help of some marketing contractors, I convinced my husband Trent Salch to join Tell Your Tale full-time in 2010 to help manage operations and some client work. We moved into an office building and have been growing ever since. Two of our initial contractors still work with us, one on a full-time basis.

We now have a team of writers, graphic designers and a web developer to serve a wide variety of clients including HP Inc., La Escondida Mexican Grill, Mentis Neuro Health and many others.

In May 2016, I graduated from the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business program and attribute our recent growth to that program.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think many professionals get to a point where they are good at their trade but not necessarily of the entrepreneur mind set. It takes a real shift from working IN the business to working ON the business. That transition can be challenging for a business owner as well as staff. Luckily, our VP Trent Salch has really been able to step in to managing our team on a daily basis so I can focus on the company’s growth. Having team members that you can truly trust is absolutely critical.

The Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business program really helped me to think more as an entrepreneur. While studying in that program, I began to look at the dynamics of my team, how we worked and how we should work together. Our office lease was coming to an end so we needed to either renew or find another location. We chose to move from an office space that had individual offices for everyone yet prevented team collaboration to an open-floor concept where our team is regularly sharing ideas and creativity blooms. It’s a much better setting for a creative agency. I also hear a lot more laughter in our office and personal engagement.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Tell Your Tale Marketing & Design story. Tell us more about the business.
Tell Your Tale helps organizations promote their products & services with graphic design, web development, PR and professional writing. Our clients tell us that we really understand their businesses and help them tell their stories. That may sound cliché but really it’s about getting to know our clients’ cultures and goals. Then, we rely on writing skills that launch into other parts of marketing. I need to know and be able to write about your story before I can create visuals, a website and campaigns to promote you. Having full-time writers on staff is a strong differentiator.

We’re very fortunate to employ team members from multiple generations and we’re a diverse group of individuals. That helps us approach situations from different angles and come up with creative solutions for our clients. We’re also small enough that we can be flexible and very responsive to our clients. What takes larger agencies to do in 2 months, we can often do in a week.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
How people interact with each other continues to change. People want more experiential environments and want 24-hour access to information. We’re always looking for new ways to collaborate and help people engage. I think technological changes will continue to impact marketing and how people interact with brands. Millennials’’ desire for immediate feedback and instant access will also continue to drive how information is shared by businesses and that’s an evolving front that we’re watching.
