Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Early.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew in Houston, in the Memorial are. I am a young adult who is working to get established. I am from an artsy and creative family who loves culture and travel. I’ve been to 29 of the 50 states and have visited countless museums on those trips. I was blessed with some amazing teachers during my time in Spring Branch Independent schools. From an early age, I felt pulled to create, explore and search for beauty.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part it has been a smooth road. I have a great family and community who supports me. One of the struggles I did face was having to decide what I wanted to devote my time and effort towards while in high school. I sacrificed some of the classic “senior year” memories in order develop my portfolio and work on commissioned pieces. I do not regret my decision to give time to art because in is important to my future and overall success.
Please tell us about Sophia’s Designs.
I work on commissioned art pieces for clients. I specialize in sentimental pieces, like sports stadiums, family pets, and Texas scenes, the more detailed the better. As an artist, my greatest achievement is winning a Scholastic National Gold Medal for my painting titled, Pop Art. Over 300,000 high school students entered all types of art and writing pieces in the contest and I was chosen as one of 1,200 winners. I got to travel to New York this summer for the award ceremony at Carnegie Hall. My piece was hung in the Parsons School for Design and is currently traveling around the United States on tour. I believe that what sets me apart from others is my ability to see something ordinary, like the soda bottles from my piece, and make something beautiful from them.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I could change something regarding my journey, I think it would be starting to focus and devote more time to not only do art at an earlier age but, to also learn about the art and artists that came before me. I have a high appreciation for art when I see it around me and I want to know more about the artists that created the pieces. I want to discover more artists in my community as well as from the past. It is touching to know what drives an artist to pursue their dreams. I feel knowledge and relationships with other artists, will enrich my life and my creative spirit so I will make that a greater priority moving forward.
