Meet Takiya Williams of The Butter Bar Skincare in West Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Takiya Williams.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Takiya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Northern California and relocated to Houston, Texas at the age of 16. From my middle school days, I began my battle with acne. It took a toll on my self-confidence, for sure. Once I got to high-school, I was allowed to start wearing make-up. I never went anywhere outside without putting make-up on, to cover my blemishes.

Having such low self-confidence, I was shy, easily intimidated, and super quiet unless we already had a close relationship. Doing my make-up everyday, I started to become very talented. Bold pops of color, detailed cut crease, daring lipstick choices. By 18, I decided I wanted to be a make-up artist, just as a side hustle while I attended Texas Southern University. So, after my freshmen year at TSU, I decided to go into the esthetics program at Ogle School. In the beginning, my main focus was makeup… but I soon fell in love with facials.

As I progressed in school, I didn’t fall out of love with make-up, just the idea of doing it on others. I’ve now learned so much about the human skin, I am passionate to educate others on how to care for their skin because I didn’t have anyone to share their knowledge with me when I needed it most. Now that I know how to better manage my own skin, I’m much more confident in being able to educate others!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Unfortunately, it has not been a smooth road. Before I even made the decision to leave TSU, I was having panic attacks on what my family would say. College had been what I dreamed about for years! I didn’t want to be labeled as a dropout, or a quitter. All throughout the esthetics program, I faced car troubles. Financial troubles. Mental health troubles. After I graduated, I was so scared to test that I procrastinated and put it off for four and a half months. Finally, one day, I decided that it was time to suck it up and schedule my licensing exams. I passed both with flying colors, the first time around! From then on, I’ve been working non-stop to build myself up as a licensed esthetician.

Please tell us about The Butter Bar Skincare.
I am an esthetician at The Butter Bar Skincare; a Black Owned spa that offers advanced facial and body treatments, lashes, and waxing. I, personally, also offer and specialize in brow threading. As a business, we are most proud of the fact that we make all of our all-natural products by hand within our actual store. With this, we are able to offer a customized experience that we provide for each and every one of our clients, as I believe that is what sets us apart from other businesses. Most of them provide non-flexible procedures, which doesn’t feel as comfortable for the client. Here at The Butter Bar, we ensure our client’s experience to be the best!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would be any family event that all of my cousins came to. No matter the circumstances, we always found SOMETHING to do, so we were never bored around each other.
