Meet Gabriel Yett of Solicai in Northeast Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Yett.

Gabriel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a freshman in high school, I was in a desktop publishing class. It was my first time ever taking a class like this. We had an assignment where the teacher came up with a topic and we had to design a logo around it. I took the task to heart and produced work, now looking back at it, which was very sub par. Nonetheless, the teacher said that she believed I had the creative eye to become a graphic designer.

Fast forward to my senior year, I had no idea what I wanted to go to college for other than I knew that I needed continuing education to be able to eventually provide for myself. I received a call on late evening from a recruiter at a technical college. I spoke with them shortly about their programs and focused in on their Graphic Design program. I explained the details to my great grandma who raised me and she told me that if that is what I wanted to do that she would be behind me 100%. She paid for all of the registration fees and the initial cost of enrollment.

Before my senior year ended, my great grandma passed away. She was my everything and I couldn’t let her down. I went to college, graduated with my Associates Degree in Graphic Arts & Marketing.

After many ups and downs that life throws at you, I kept focused. From photography to web design, I learned everything I could to help make my business a creative hub for my clients, which I continue to do so today.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve been at points in my life where I had to sell photography equipment just to survive. I’ve been homeless. I’ve gone days without eating. But when you have the drive of a little boy that grew up in the country with nothing, there’s nothing that can get you to give up on yourself.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Solicai – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The main focus of Solicai is being able to empower small business to compete graphically with larger ones. To create something that is unique to their company, that cuts through standard marketing and speaks to their customers. Pricing is also a big deal to me. Not everyone has a million dollar budget for marketing, especially when they are starting off. Solicai fills that gap.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love about Houston has to be the diversity of its people and the diversity of the city. Each area has something distinct about it, but at the end of the day everyone here is Houston, regardless of where they were born. We all help create what this city is.
