Meet Kimberly Borges and Miriam McDonald of PWR WMN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Borges and Miriam McDonald.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
PWR WMN is an ethos and clothing store created by Women, for Women. The future is female and working women put a lot of time and money into their wardrobe, only to feel that their clothes don’t make them feel like the confident professionals they truly are. Like you, we’re tired of going to 20 different stores to get the best price on a single outfit, and finding out it just isn’t US. We’re also tired of buying work clothes that aren’t even equipped with the pockets and flexibility men get in their blazers, we need to feel ready and prepared for anything, and that means carrying what we need on us at all times, without having to “go grab your purse”. That’s why we’ve created PWR WMN. So you can move and act with confidence and in a way that makes you feel AND look good, all without breaking the bank.

The feeling of connecting with women entrepreneurs, and receiving their support by entering into this sisterhood will turn us all into a force. We want to literally wear that power on our sleeves. They’re a representation of who we are: creating our own power, crafting our own clothing and unlocking our inner greatness. No matter if it’s a meeting, a lunch or a business trip: we’re here to take charge of our fashion, take ownership of the tools we need to succeed, and take command of our future. A future that’s female. With equality and functional POCKETS for all. Thank you all for your support … we are SO excited!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been many obstacles along the road but nothing Google couldn’t help with! We entered entrepreneurship with absolutely no knowledge about what it took or what we needed to do to start a business. I remember that I actually Googled “how to start an online store” and just poured over each blog and article. Finding a manufacturer was also very difficult. We wanted to keep the price of our clothes as accessible as possible but still make clothing that lasted a very long time, we wanted to make investment pieces. Once we found the right manufacturer and selected the right materials for our clothing (after many trials and many errors), the process flowed a lot smoother. There are still many obstacles facing us that we will need to overcome (I just had my baby almost two months ago and my partner Miriam works full time, and we live in different cities), but it is 100% worth it. This is something we are very passionate about that we will not give up on so every step we take, easy or difficult, is worth it!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the PWR WMN story. Tell us more about the business.
PWR WMN specializes in making business clothes for the modern businesswoman. All of our pieces are equipped with the pockets needed to carry all of the tools necessary for her to be ready for any meeting, presentation, or client lunch. She doesn’t need to “just go grab her purse “… she’s ready to go! Our pieces include the benefits of a male blazer without taking away any femininity. We don’t need to be or dress masculine to look competent or strong, there is strength in our experience as women and there is no need to hide that behind dull and neutral colors. We are most proud of how these pieces make our PWR WMN feel. Every time we get a text saying how strong and ready for anything they felt in their blazers, it proves to us how necessary this brand is. What sets us apart is the fact that we are two women from the corporate workforce, taking the things we learned and wished we had, and applying it to our designs. We aren’t removed from the environment in which these blazers and pants would be worn, so we know what women want and need, and we don’t ignore it, we use it.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We have been fortunate enough to meet many amazing people along the way that have helped us reach as many people as possible. A month before we were set to launch we met the founder of Rent my Wardrobe, Rachel Sipperley. She was kind enough to invite us to one of her events and encouraged us to start selling immediately which we did. After that event we realized just how much women loved these blazers and it lit a fire under us to fight even harder for our dream. We have also had great luck with our manufacturer, both in finding them and in working with them. Having my baby right after I quit my job to dedicate myself fully to PWR WMN, has also been good luck. It’s been incredibly hard and some may say it’s not the right timing but it has focused me and pushed me even more to ensure that this company and brand succeeds!
