Meet Nicole Tapia Torres

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Tapia Torres.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in Lima, Perú, but moved at the age of eight to New York, and then later on came here to Houston to finish middle school.

I’ve always been passionate for art. Whether it was drawing, dancing, and even singing, you name it, I loved it all, But painting always had a soft spot on me, even as a child, ever since I could remember.

When I was younger, I used to love making small drawings for my mom of how my day went, or even random stuff going through my mind; even though they weren’t even close to perfect, she always still supported me through everything by telling me how much she loved them. Then one day my mom decided to take me to michaels and bought me my first acrylic paint along with some canvases. boom. At that moment, my creativity begin to flow naturally. Next thing I knew my whole room was filled by my artwork.

My dad then encourage me to take some art classes back in Perú when I went to visit. Don’t get me wrong. To this day, I still do love taking art classes and get inspired to broaden my knowledge for art, while learning new techniques, but now I would just rather experience things by myself, and self learn. From any mistakes, I make to turning them as beautiful as they can be.

Even though I’ve experimented with different types of art throughout my life, one of my favorite types of art would have to be acrylic painting because I have a passion for mixing different beautiful colors to create one of a kind art piece. What usually inspires me to make art is; I like to focus and see how beautiful nature can really be, The love couples can have for one another is truly beautiful, and I also like to paint things that are not the most common thing you would see, making it controversial so people can try to figure them out. Lastly the main reason why I do all this is because I love getting feedback, seeing reactions, and getting people’s opinions.

The only reason I am where I am now, Is truly because of the people I surrounded my self with. I would have to thank my love one, friends and my family. For always encourage me to step out of my comfort zone and finally put myself out there on the “real world”. The first ever Art show I’ve ever got invited to was back at the end of December on Dallas, TX on a venue and the event was called, “Women’s day Extravaganza”, I was really nervous for it since I’ve never done anything similar to this before, but everyone told me to go for it. They found my Instagram account through common followers, so the manager in charge of the event dm me, with the cause of the event and whether I would love to be a part of it. First thing that happened when I got there, I was so nervous, but when I saw people looking through my art, admiring, and taking pictures. That’s when I realized wow I love doing this, its like sharing a little bit of myself through my art. Later that day I talked to other fellow artists for advice on how can I make this something I can do frequently. Their advice was basically, “don’t ever let anyone put you down, and put yourself out there and engage with people” which I do till this day. Now I’m a part-time artist and student, and wouldn’t be happier, doing what I love the most.

Has it been a smooth road?
I would say it has both its ups and downs, like any other thing. My major struggle was being an artist part-time while also studying the other, it can be hard at times. Managing time was really a struggle, but I learned the hard way, and be more organized with my times. Not just that, but also through the beginning putting myself out there and talking to different galleries to put myself there and display my art was challenging some would denied and some will accept thats just how things were. Even though being denied at time wasn’t as hurtful to me as it would of been to others, I learned to never give up on something that makes you happy, so rather then it making me upset, I would just take it as try again but harder this time thing.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Nicoles.arte, “Nicole Tapia Torres” started when I turned 18, is more of a name I go for as an artist, when I display my art. As I said before I was born in Peru and over there we take both your dad’s and mom’s last name, so when people ask for my name here I like to keep that tradition and go with both, so when it comes to my art I just love putting my full name on display. I would say I specialize mostly on acrylic painting, controversial topics. I’m most proud of all the people I’ve meet while doing this, and all of the new homes my pieces have gone to. What sets me apart from others I would have to say I love paintings things never seen before, so I would see people’s reactions to it.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years, I would love to have more connections and get more opportunities to showcase my art in bigger places, maybe even travel to other states to meet new people.
