Today we’d like to introduce you to Braylon Alexander.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Braylon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a kid from as early as I can remember at about 6-8, I began watching all movies in every genre, what struck interest was Tyler Perry’s stage musicals. Along with that it was America’s Next Top Model from about Cycle 2. Shortly after, I began praise dancing, krump dancing as I got closer into my teenage years. Sports began to be a passion but outside of that, I had exposure to circuses, dollar theaters, The Lion King tours, etc. There was a silent cry to create yet it was suppressed due to outside influence. After 8th grade, that was what I thought was the last of the arts until it revolved and met me in high school late my Junior year, as an athlete, those types of things were on the low…an athlete who’s into the arts, acting, dancing and singing.
My senior year I decided to take theatre more serious being involved in Speech and Debate under my Honors teacher Matthew Wilmore, more plays began to take place and furthermore solidifying what I wanted to do with my life. Which was, stop athletics and pursue a career in theatre, all things theatrical honestly. Today, I am in deep with musicals, stage plays, films, commercials, modeling, you name it. I’ve been blessed to meet elders who are where I am going via Hollywood, Broadway, locally, Austin, San Antonio, and the like here in Houston that are making moves and are pioneering the way through the arts and really changing lives. All of the hard work is showing itself worthy, the seeds sown are reaping an abundance in my harvesting seasons.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
By far, it hasn’t been the smoothest road, didn’t even begin that way. Where the actual shift happened, the road was different itself. Before it had been my mother and I living with our relatives, past lovers, homeless shelters, at parks, friends floors and couches, as long as I could cover myself, I was fine. I grew apart from friends in the respect of them not understanding why I chose theatre and dance, the arts. My sexuality was questioned/insinuated by people who knew my history with whom I have dated. Mentally, the journey has been a roller coaster, depression sucks, anxiety sucks, idle-mindedness sucks, lacking that health period sucks. As a man, I am constantly on a journey to bettering myself and openly realizing/admitting those flaws. Not having a car and having to commute by bus is tough too. I have to leave somewhere 1-3 hours early to be on time. It’s all just about how bad you want to succeed and what am you are willing to change to ensure greatness in generational form. On the contrary, getting accustomed/assimilated into the culture of the arts has become easier over a year or so, with consistent pursuit. Little nuggets throughout childhood made me further realize creativity was connected to me like inhale, exhale; applying specific a work ethic in my endeavors that sports instilled some solid values to allow the transition of hard work and grinding to be made in my pursuit in the arts. Seeking knowledge personally and for my career has been like a bad itch, only it’s enjoyable. I recently got a chance to watch the film “Birthmarked” which let me know I’m on the right track.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
THE FOCUS: BEING A BETTER ARTIST DAILY, a soon to be squeezed sponged, whether it’s behind the camera as a model, dancing a created piece or teaching, acting in films/stage plays/musicals, music, poetry; testing my hands in film photography and instruments. I am engulfed by the arts and creating. Currently, I have a few projects in the mix, October 25-27 we open for “Pecong” as Jason Allcock, a neighboring islander, who’s in pursuit of being Calypso champion. “The Houston Urban Nutcracker” opens late December in a supporting role that’s definitely a blessing regardless the title, the scale and little successes is what I love. After a few years of auditioning, I’ve recently been cast in “Ensemble Theatre Houston’s TourEd Company“. Theatre is my specialty and acting has somehow subconsciously been a huge factor in my life and I feel as though the rawness I possess, being rough around the edges and the WILL is what sets me apart from others and the forever evolving me. I just need the right person to invest in me or job to act as an enormous catapult.
I AM ARTIST.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck’s role has been full of adversity yet it has its balance. In the simple things, weather may have postponed an event that’ll open up space to attend another event that didn’t mind pushing through for success, Secondly, the journey every day as a black man is a meaningful luck, I get to be immersive via performing arts amongst the misconceptions of what a man “should be” daily and progress while doing so in creating life-changing content. One of the many things I’ve encountered has been stereotypes and the justice system e.g. experiences with law enforcement; two words, Rodney King, at just only 15 years old. The Universe has definitely aligned things up for me in a way that they flow and tends to play a little adrenaline rush game along the way. I am extremely blessed and can only control what I react to.
