Meet Lauren Blakes of Blakes Cakes in South Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Blakes.

Lauren, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was in high school, I began making cupcakes for my friend’s birthdays. I would decorate them based on pictures they liked from Pinterest. Once I went to college, I became too busy and decided to stop baking and focus more on school. Once I was nearing graduation, I thought to myself, “What better way to start baking again than to make my own graduation cake”! And from there, I decided to actually make it a business. In October 2017, Blakes Cakes was born. I started only doing cakes for close family and friends and before I knew it, I was taking orders from people other than friends and family.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Absolutely not! Being an entrepreneur while working a full-time job is no joke. It takes time managment, passion and drive on a daily basis. There is a big difference between baking as a hobby and baking as a business. And there have been numerous times where I have wanted to quit, but my customers are what keeps me going. I get a sense of satisfaction when a customer says, “Wow! This cake is amazing!” or “This is the best cake I have had in a while”. Those days will always outweigh the rough ones, and remind me why I love what I do.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Blakes Cakes – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
At Blakes Cakes, our #1 goal is to deliver a beautiful and tasty treat while providing excellent customer service. We offer custom cakes and treats for any and all occasions. Cakes, cupcakes, chocolate covered sweets, cookies, and lollipops just to name a few. We have done birthdays, anniversaries, gender reveals, baby showers, graduations, birthday dinners, any event you can think of. We specialize in alcohol-infused treats, such as Hennessy cakes and chocolate-covered strawberries, Crown Apple cupcakes and alcohol-infused lollipops.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our plan for the future is to offer new products. We want to be a “one stop treat shop” per say, where you can order a cake and other treats at the same time. We are also looking at expanding our kitchen and staff so that we can serve more people.
