Today we’d like to introduce you to Risko Funk.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At age 12, I started rapping with some friends from my neighborhood & by age 17, I was rapping with a crew called The Choppaholix and my freestyles were getting played on the radio every Sunday night. As soon as I walked into my first studio session with DJ Ovadose (Choppaholix), I wanted to know everything I could about recording and producing my own records. At age 18, I stumbled upon a free version of a software called Fruity Loops and I started teaching myself how to program and arrange my own tracks, fast forward a couple of years and I more or less left rapping behind me. I started producing for all my friends and got more into songwriting, doing hooks over the beats I was making for the artists I was working with. I got into the beat battle scene shortly after and started honing my skills against the top producers in the city, and before long, the nation.
After a couple of years in that circuit, I got tired of all the competition and decided to bring my focus back to making songs. I’ve come back with a new energy and sound that was more complete in comparison to my earlier work. I’ve been focusing on building my brand as well as my catalogue these days, uploading music to Beatstars.com, my own website, RiskoFunk.com, and building my presence on social media. You can now find videos of me creating as well as tutorials of how to make your own beats from scratch all over my Instagram, YouTube accounts as well as on my own website http://riskofunk.com.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Struggles and challenges are just part of the game. We need them to push our own limits and grow from them. I’ve had too many to pick from but the one that probably sucked the most was when my hard drive crashed and I lost the last five years of music I had made up to that point. That was a heartbreak it took me a while to bounce back from. I didn’t even feel like making music for about a good year or two.
Risko Funk – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Funk Yard LLC is a company I decided to start with some close friends. Right now, I’m the only “act” we’re actively pushing, but we’re looking forward to more than just music. TV, Film, Art, Video Games, etc. What I’m most proud of is that no matter what the setback or outlook, my guys are down to ride until the wheels fall off & never take a loss to the heart. I guess that would also be what I feel separates us from everyone else. We’ve stuck it out through really hard times and never switched upon each other. I can count on all my guys. They’re not just hangin’ around when things are great.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success, in my own personal opinion is absolute freedom, both financial and creative. Not becoming a slave to the expectations of anyone around you. Making sure your family is well taken care of & having the power to empower others. Success for me is building something that lasts long after I’m gone. Generational wealth & ownership of your destiny.
