Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Gonzalez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jonathan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
DJ GONZ HAS steadily worked over the past 15 years to become an integral member of the DJ community in Houston, TX. DJ Gonz brings musicality and honed technical skills to the dance floor wherever he goes. Winner of multiple DJ battles, Gonz joined Houston’s own The Kracker Nuttz Dj Crew in 2011 and began to bring his talents to radio stations nationwide.
I started off thinking that Djing was a chessy thing because I had seen a commercial with a dj on it and he looked so comical with his headphones on his head all weird. Eventually, I figured out why they did that and also good friend of mine gave me a copy of a VHS (I’m dating myself now) of a Dj battle that would forever change what I wanted to do with my life. I spent hours in hours in a hot garage learning all I could so I could compete in dj battles. Had some victories and defeats but it really cemented my drive to keep getting better. In regards to my current Dj life, I do a majority of Corporate and Specialty events. I really enjoy being able to showcase my technical ability alongside the Party rocking side of my talents. Nothing beats that energy when any song you play and any technical thing you do the crowd is on your side hyping it up more and more. I also play alongside a String Quartet and we are known as Divisi “Collide” where I dj alongside the strings where we perform together in a unique fashion.
“Know your crowd, yes, but know your music, too” says Gonz, who is known for his ability to shift disco to EDM to reggae in a way to make you want to jump around or just groove through the night. My influences are Four Color Zack, DJ Shadow, Masters at Work, DJ Kentaro, and DJ Craze. I’m always trying to educate myself with learning new music and technology that evolves the industry.
When playing, I am play open format in order to maintain the flexibility that comes with playing to different crowds. No matter the genre, or the culture, I try to create a truly memorable experience for you and your guests. Sponsored by Houston’s premier DJ supply store Mega DJ Center, I share my talents with those interested in learning and perfecting their skills on the turntables and I offer private lessons at the store or at your home.
I really enjoy giving back to the Dj culture that has done so much for me. I feel it’s only right to pass down the knowledge I know to future Djs because education to me is so important. I have been teaching Djing to various ages and walks of life and it’s the best feeling when they start getting the fundamentals and just have the biggest smile on there faces. It means a lot that I can provide that feeling of accomplishment to someone else.
I currently have gone into producing music and producing shows alongside A film company named Row7films where we host our monthly event called bowl cuts. I also host a music producer session once a month where we gather music producers around from Houston and we give each other feedback on how to make songs sound better.
I have released multiple albums and have placements of my tracks on numerous Video Creator Vlogs. My current goal is to break through to the TV film industry and get my music on the big screen. I have many people to thank and appreciate all those who have given me support and advice to keep me going.
Has it been a smooth road?
There has been obstacles. Never easy leaving a job that is stable to chasing your dream and waking up the next day like “Okay, I am my own boss now, You wanted this so you better figure it out”.Taken that first step is always the toughest but you can do it. It will reveal a lot about your tenacity and holding yourself accountable to get things done.
