Today we’d like to introduce you to Curtis Pettaway Jr.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My whole life I’ve always loved and had a passion for music and all its art forms. Listening to cassette tapes of Kriss Kross and wearing my pants backward, my cousins and I putting on dance shows by the pool for our aunts and uncles, playing beats on the school lunch tables, trying to sing and dance like Michael Jackson and playing drums and percussion all through junior high and high school.
I started college at Texas Christian University on a partial music education scholarship and decided after a few years that I wanted to look more into the business of music and record label areas. I then decided to transfer to Belmont University in Nashville TN, where I was a music business major and was still able to play drums and DJ different shows around the city. Also, through Belmont I was able to intern at Def Jam Records in New York and gain valuable hands-on experience in the music industry.
After graduating from Belmont, I worked on various projects for a few years around Nashville and decided it was best that I move back to my hometown of Houston, TX. Here, I started teaching private music lessons around the city and worked for a major music store teaching drums as well.
When Hurricane Harvey hit, I lost my full-time job to the flood and was only making a little bit teaching at the music store. From there, I decided to just go all in on my dream of owning my own lessons, rehearsal space and recording studio. That’s when Dynamic Sound Houston was born!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s definitely been a bumpy road! Socially, I use to stutter pretty bad when I was younger so that really hindered a lot of my growth coming up. I was always good at different things but never great at one thing. I would always just get to a level where I would plateau and never get any better. On the personal end, my sister Dana died when I was 12 in a tragic car accident and made me really overcome emotional issues coming up. Our family created a non-profit organization in her name called DMP Ministries and it has really helped me cope ever since.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Dynamic Sound Houston story. Tell us more about the business.
Dynamic Sound Houston is an all in one music & creative facility. We specialize in Music Lessons, Rehearsal Space for Musicians, Photography & Event Space, Recording and Music Production!
I think we would be most known for including a lot of social media in our space, rehearsals and lessons and we try to tag everyone that comes in on our posts! We want to make it an interactive environment and really bring the Houston music community together. We are #1 in Drum Lessons in the city and we are striving to make all other lessons and rehearsal space #1 as well!
Most recently we’ve added a Music Star Team Building Event to our repertoire! Groups 5-20 can come experience what it’s like to Rock out on the instrument of their choice or come record a song in the studio and perform on stage the same day!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t really believe in luck per say. When God has called you to do something there’s nothing stopping his calling on your life, except you.
Also, I think when preparation meets opportunity, then excellent things can happen.
