Meet Shannon Stellhorn of A Sacred Journey Midwifery Services in Cypress

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Stellhorn.

Shannon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been fascinated with pregnancy and childbirth since a young age. As a teenager, I baby sat a lot of babies, as well as volunteered at a pregnancy resource center. I was looking at enrolling in the nursing program after graduation and was very interested in the midwifery program some of the schools talked about. It was not the season then for me, but the idea stayed in my mind. My husband and I worked at a maternity home for teenagers who were being pushed into an abortion soon after we were married. Working with them and seeing how awful the hospitals were to them in their birthing times made me know that I would be using a midwife and going a different path. I started my path into doula work near the end of my first pregnancy in late 2007. My positive birth experience at a birth center in 2008 pulled on my calling into midwifery. I started my midwifery training soon after birthing my next child in early 2010 and achieved my license in the spring of 2012. I truly love what I do, and is very much a calling upon my life. Since receiving my license over seven years ago and starting my practice, I have been honored to serve close to 250 couples, with full involvement in births since 2007 totally over 500.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I feel my journey first as a doula really helped my midwifery business become successful early on. My name was already in the community, so within my first year, I worked with almost 40 families.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with A Sacred Journey Midwifery Services – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am owner and midwife with A Sacred Journey Midwifery Services in the Cypress area. I average 30-40 births a year, with special specialties working with women expecting their first babies and women desiring a vaginal delivery after a cesarean. I am so blessed by the opportunity to get to work with such a diverse clientele, and truly believe who I am meant to work with comes to me.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
There are big changes in store for 2020! The biggest change is that I will be hiring Amy Embrey as a second midwife with my practice in early 2020 once she finalizes receiving her licenses and takes her board exam. Am has been with me over 2.5 years doing her clinical apprenticeship and is already a familiar face amongst the Sacred Journey Midwifery family. Having two midwives will be such a wonderful opportunity for our clients. They will know that at least one of us will attend every birth, with most births having both of us.
