Meet Juan Cabrera of JC Media in South Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Cabrera.

Juan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My interest in graphic design started by using photo editing apps on my iPhone. Mostly shared on social media just for fun. I decided to take things further by going to school and properly learn the skills needed for programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. I enrolled to San Jacinto Community College for their Art & Design program in 2015. It was a very educational program that teaches you everything there is to multimedia. The classes vary from photography, typography, digital art, to web design and digital video. In 2017, I started to take in projects from friends. I’m an active musician in the Houston metal scene so I took advantage of that and offered my services to new bands and producers.

Slowly I started getting more clients from the music scene as well as small business owners. It wasn’t easy having a full-time job, going to school, being in a band, and doing graphic design as a side hustle, but I was dedicated and made it happen. Got my Occupational Certificate in 2018 and I plan to work towards my Certificate of Technology. JC Media is nearly three years old and I’m so proud of the positive feedback it has gotten over the years. I continue to get new clients and many returning clients as I learn new skills. There’s always something new to learn and that keeps me motivated. It’s an amazing feeling seeing your own craft being apart of someone else’s passion whether it’s the brand of their business, marketing, band logo, or album art. I hope to continue to grow this business and eventually make it into a career.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’ definitely been a bumpy road. I graduated High School in 2011 but didn’t go to college until 2014. So there’s that gap of me just trying to figure out what I wanted to do in my life even though it was right in front of my face the whole time. I needed to find that motivation again. Having a full-time job limited my time in school so it took longer than what I wanted to get started on doing Graphic Design. I had a lot to learn when I started but in time, I improved and my turnarounds took less time. It’s all about time management and learning not to overwork yourself. Once you find that balance it becomes easier.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about JC Media – what should we know?
JC Media is a multimedia service company. I specialize in branding, photo/video editing, and digital art. I’m proud of how far I’ve come since the beginning. People continue to support and recommend my work and it truly humbles me. I know I’m not the best but I make sure that my clients are 100% satisfied with my work and put maximum effort in every project.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I’d like to credit all of my professors in school for teaching me what I needed to know, my clients for trusting me with their vision, and of course my wife, family and friends for the oncoming support through this journey. I couldn’t have done this without them.
