Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Miller, RD, LD, CDE.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ali. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am an Integrative Dietitian which is a registered dietitian with a background in functional integrative medicine. I founded Naturally Nourished, a functional medicine private practice in 2012. Prior to opening my private practice, I worked for a physician’s medical group as the Director of Integrative Medicine and Lifestyle care. In this role, I worked with patients who were diagnosed with dysmetabolic disease (pre-diabetes, hypertension, elevated cholesterol, increased waist circumference). I was given 3 months to use food-as-medicine and nutritional supplementation to prevent the need for medications and reduce those previously prescribed!
When I opened Naturally Nourished, I expanded my food-as-medicine approaches to 6 primary focuses: Digestive Health, Hormonal Health, Autoimmune Disease, Cancer Care, Weight Loss, and Neurological Conditions. As I was launching my business, I was recruited by MD Anderson Cancer Center to contribute to a research study on breast cancer using diet as a therapeutic intervention pairing with mindfulness, yoga, and
exercise. This fueled my passion for understanding that lifestyle is the most powerful tool that can work both for us and against us…a true double-edged sword! Food can be fuel and it can be the form of toxicity, inflammation, and weight gain when we select food-like substances or products over Whole REAL nourishing single ingredients!
In 2016, I published Naturally Nourished: Food-as-Medicine for Optimal Health cookbook. My book has received rave reviews and is available nationally sharing the messages that food can heal to the masses.
I focus on nourishing my body with whole, non-processed, traditional foods—single ingredient items that are locally and sustainably grown, and pasture-raised or wild caught proteins that are free of hormones and antibiotics. Everything you eat acts as a signal to your body, leading to either optimal functioning with food-as-medicine, or disease.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running a small business requires you to wear many hats! There is nothing I don’t do. There were days when I’d start with a live TV segment, see 6 clients, hold a staff meeting, post on social media, and then be left with HR and email catch up in the late hours of the night (or next morning!). Another area of difficulty is, it is so important to be successful to give-to-grow so you are constantly “doing”. I am slowly learning how to say no when needed! In the medical field, it is truly an epidemic where no one heals the healer and we all overwork to provide care. Luckily, in a private practice model, I can control the demand and load to focus on self-care, balance, and bliss which is essential in providing the most connected care! Ultimately when I am able to authentically live it I can create it and support it in others.
Please tell us about Naturally Nourished.
Naturally Nourished is different from any other nutrition practice as we were the first to use Functional Integrative medicine in a clinical practice with a food-as-medicine focus of care. I have been using advanced lab testing and food therapies for over 10 years now and it is exciting to see it reaching into the greater Houston area. My protocols have been shared in advanced medical training for physicians, nurses, and other clinicians.
Most recently I served as the only dietitian to present at Methodist Hospital to a room of over 200 medical professionals in Functional Medicine: A Systems Approach to Chronic Disease and Wellness. I continue to work with my staff of dietitians to ensure the most up-to-date clinically relevant interventions are made and we work to tailor protocols to clients’ needs treating the root cause of chronic conditions.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
