Meet Abisai Moran

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abisai Moran.

Abisai, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
People usually call me Abi but I don’t live in Houston, I live in Galveston, Texas but I call Houston my second home because I promise I am always there. I started dancing when I was about ten years old. I didn’t want to, My younger brother loved to dance and my mom decided to take him to a studio called “DLS Dance studio”. She brought me too and I was a very shy girl at the time. My brother stopped dancing but I fell in love with it and kept going. I’ve been dancing for six years. I stayed in that studio until three years and a friend of mine came to the studio and asked me to audition for a team called “Riot Squad” in “Soundbox Dance Studio” in Houston, TX. I auditioned and later, I got a message saying that they would like me to try out for their younger junior team called “lunchbox”. I did because I was determined to make it. I got in and I remember being so happy. I only did a year with them because of my age but I auditioned for Riot squad again because It was the biggest goal for me at the time. I would watch their videos from “world of dance” and be so amazed and inspired by them. I’m so pleased to say that I got in. I’ve been a member of soundbox ever since.

After that, I been pretty much dancing in Houston all the time and being so into the Houston community. I’ve been training and growing so fast as a dancer. I’m on the studio team’s riot squad and galing and an outside team called diversity. From being in the back of my dance teams to having front and center now and getting selects because of my hard work paying off. I’m very active as well. In Galveston, I play piano at a church school called “FanFare” and I’ve done three years of ballet in a studio called “Galveston Ballet”. I also know how to play clarinet and I’m very involved in my church “St.Patricks”. Now I’ve been trying to be the best version of myself and growing as a person and dancer.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, it’s hasn’t been smooth. And it makes sense. Life isn’t supposed to be smooth and easy, everyone will have their obstacles and bumps in life and it’s all different for everyone. Time management is very hard for me. I’m very busy all the time, I barely have time to do homework or other things. I don’t get as much sleep as I should but I try to finish all my responsibilities before getting any rest. I’m very small so In dance, I have to really train and push myself to either dance as good as the kids who are younger than me or be on the same level as the adults and making my movement big because I’m small. I’ve always been criticized for being so petite but it really just makes me push myself to prove anyone wrong. Living far away is pretty hard too, I live an hour away from Houston and that’s without the traffic. My parents really support me and I’m very blessed so they would take turns to take me to my practice and I pretty much have practice every day. My family gets very tired but like I said I’m really bless to have them support me so much. So it really hasn’t been easy but all these obstacles have made me grow so tremendously and they just make me stronger to push myself in dance and life.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m an aspiring Dancer who does ballet, contemporary, jazz, modern, and hip hop. I love training in all styles of dance and I go to many conventions like misfit dance camp in Texas, Radix, Buildabeast and many more. I hope to be able to work with people in the Houston community as well as around the world. And to keep growing to become the best version of myself as a dancer and person.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Being completely honest my favorite childhood memory is finding my love for dance. It started to be an outlet for me. From being so shy to showing my emotions through dance. Dance made me say things or show people what I couldn’t through talking. I’m very grateful for dance. I started being more determined than ever, wanting to work hard for the goals I set myself up to. I just get so happy and smile so hard about dancing, I love the feeling of the music and being as creative and crazy as I want to.
