Today we’d like to introduce you to Janet Martinez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Janet. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Starting a small sweets business had been on my mind for months last year. It wasn’t until a friend and I attended an event hosted by Mayra, owner of Sweet Galeanna bakery in South Houston. She created Fourteen Eleven, an organization that empowers and inspires women. After having attended that event, I lost my job literally weeks after. I thought, ok it”s a sign. This was the push that I needed to fully commit to opening my little business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As much as everyone who starts from scratch would like to have a smooth start, it wasn’t. I was scared and didn’t know where to begin. Change and new beginnings are always tough. But with the moral support of family & friends and through faith and prayer, I got through it. I reached out to people I had met at Fourteen Eleven and asked questions and asked for advice. I researched and connected with others on social media and started working my way from there.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the SweetEFX story. Tell us more about the business.
My business name is short for sweet effects. I want my sweets to have a sweet (positive) affect on my clients… Making people feel happy makes me happy. We need more happy in our lives sometimes.
I specialize in custom decorated sugar cookies but also make chocolate covered strawberries and cake pops on occasion.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck. Hmm *insert thinking emoji* lol. Honestly, I don’t think “I got lucky” or “with my bad luck, etc..etc..etc.”. God plays a huge part in my life and he knows what he has planned for me.
