Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Jamea.
Emily, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was fortunate to grow up in a home in which a healthy discussion of sexuality was not taboo, but it became apparent to me very early that most of my friends had a different upbringing. I quickly became the one that my friends went to for advice and questions about sex. When I was an undergrad at The University of Texas, I took a Human Sexuality course as an elective and knew from that point on that I wanted to focus my work in Psychology in this field. I find that sex drives so much of human behavior, is such an intrinsic part of relationships, and effects and is affected by so many aspects of our psychology. Not long after, I discovered there was a need in Texas for more therapists who focus on sexuality. We still live in a relatively conservative state, and many schools still teach abstinence-only sex education. I feel lucky to not only have discovered my passion but also to have the opportunity to serve an important need in the community.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While I’ve certainly faced some barriers – and made some mistakes – along the way, my values and personality have helped prevent barriers from becoming true obstacles. I would say that my strengths in networking, willingness to reach out for help when I need it, and desire to connect with the community outside my office doors has helped my business to thrive. My advice to young women starting out is that you have to work harder than you think you do to grow a successful business. When I first started out, I sought out as many speaking engagements and networking opportunities that I could. I think a lot of women think success will come with branding and social media presence, but in many industries – mine in particular – you have to actually get out there and connect with people IRL.
Please tell us about REVIVE therapy & healing.
I work as a psychotherapist who specializes in sex and relationship therapy. I’m known for treating some of the more complex cases out there. Many people don’t realize sex therapy isn’t at all about “tips and tricks.” Really good sex therapists treat trauma, complex relationship issues, family of origin problems, self-esteem issues, and so much more. I’ve had advanced training in these and other areas of mental and relationship health. I would say one thing that sets me apart from others is my presence in the community. As wonderful as it is to help my clients in the office, I also love reaching a wider audience. I might be one of the few people who actually enjoys public speaking – especially Q&A sessions when I have to think of my toes – and this has helped me educate larger groups on healthy sexuality.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
My best advice for finding a mentor to never settle for someone who doesn’t truly embody that which you hope to become. It’s easy to settle for convenience over quality. Over the years, I’ve sometimes paid hefty consultation fees to connect with some of the best in the field. But I’ve been happy to because the return on my investment is there. I think mentors recognize when someone has true passion and a strong drive. I’ll also add that I think it’s better to have a local mentor. I think people fear that this will lead to competition, but I actually find it leads to healthy collaboration. They will usually end up referring back to you in the future.
