Meet Cristina Kooker of KHOU 11

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Kooker.

Cristina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Today my title is Reporter/Producer for Houston’s only morning show, Great Day Houston on KHOU CH. 11. But before that, I held titles such as floor director, teleprompter, assistant to the assistant, paper printer, lunch getter, gum holder, and the list goes on as long as I-10. I was fortunate enough to start my TV career here in Houston when I was just 20 years old, now two decades later, I’m living the dream of doing television in the city I love most. People often ask how I got here and my answer is always the same… run through every open door and when it’s closed… open it!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is the road ever easy? The bumpy roads always have the best stories! For the most part, my journey in television has been a great one, but it was the times I was told, “no” that made me who I am today. I believe everything happens for a reason, you just have to practice what I call the 4 P’s. Patience. Presence. Positivity. Perseverance.

What else should we know?
I have three children, but my first baby is named Great Day Houston! I was a part of the original crew for the show’s debut on March 6th, 2006. At the time, I wasn’t married and didn’t have any kiddos yet, so I poured my heart and soul into Houston’s only morning show. In the last 13 years, the show has become a loved, trusted staple of for the city. We show you what’s new, what’s classic, what’s a must and everything in between. Food, family, fun… you name it, we’ve covered it! Makes me proud to be associated with something Houston holds so close to their heart.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I lost both my parents when I was in my 20’s and most people gasp and say, that’s so young, but I had 20 something of the best years and the greatest memories thanks to them. What gets me weepy is reminiscing about our annual summer vacation to Destin, Florida. Every year we would count down to the trip and then soak up the sun, relax, play, eat, shop and just be together!
