Meet José Hernández López of Silbaca in In the Loop

Today we’d like to introduce you to José Hernández López.

José, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The company started soon after my detention at an immigrant facility in 2013. I had found that I could simply not continue to live my life without some real sense of purpose. To continue, and to throw away any and all semblance of creativity and skills, I believed I had was simply not going to be something that I would be proud of doing. Starting in 2015, we received a very lucky project working in the Houston mayoral campaign. This allowed me and my partners to combine all our skills into a working business – me as a cinematographer/editor and musical composer, and my business partners as accountants and producers.

Continuing that work, we make our goal to create an equitable field in our line of work. We specialize in telling stories through narrative documentary branding that extends into showing the core human aspect of every organization that we work with. From the artistic to the corporate world, it is our goal to soundly reach the profound in every story and broadcast it to a network of individuals who look for people to trust.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It is difficult when as a business you must choose who to work with. To create a portfolio is one of the most difficult challenges, and specially when you take risks in what equipment and people you choose to work with.

Now that we are reaching some semblance of stability, we hope to keep providing more specialized work to the people of Houston we work with, and to provide a sense of trust and security with our clients. More than anything, we strive to prove that things do not have to be hard in order to be successful and that the difficulty in growth is shown in the resulting work.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
We are a full-production cinema team working in Houston. We specialize in telling stories that only the client can tell through documentary-style branding. We work with both corporate and artistic individuals as our background is specialized in these areas, for we have composers, singers, and accountants on our team.

We are proud of the work we are able to do, and the way in which we tell our stories. Our turnaround time simply has no comparison in the industry, and we do this through the consolidation of roles due to our highly specialized skill set.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up in Mexico, I had an interest in paleontology and science in general. I always had a curiosity to seek out some sort of mischievous deed or another and spent a lot of time playing with the neighborhood kids in the cul-de-sac I grew up in.

Once I moved to the United States aged 11, things changed drastically. Due to a language barrier, I spent most of my time inside, learning how to use the computer and falling in love with music. We had 4 of us in our family in a one-bedroom apartment, and very few things to entertain ourselves with. Included in that was a copy of Shrek 2, and I must have watched that at least 50 times.
