Meet Rose and Shaz of Ren & Rouge in Richmond

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rose and Shaz.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We started the business as a couple of working moms – busy juggling all the responsibilities that come along with that.

We would get together every so often and reminisce about our childhood, growing up and reflecting on how vastly different our lives were now, especially in comparing how our mothers raised us versus how we raise our kids today!

One of the regularly recurring themes in our conversations would be the difficulty we found in finding proper clothing for our boys. Out of our four young kids, two of them suffered from dermatitis, and it was always challenging to find something which both looked nice and was also suitable for their sensitive skins.

We were talking one day and reflecting on how different it felt when we were growing. Our moms would make us wear 100% pure cotton clothing, and we remembered how great the material was. We decided to try it out with our kids, and they loved it. They could finally feel comfortable just like we did as kids.

We decided to sit down again and talk more seriously about this problem. There was a need for such comfortable clothing but also designs that looked nice and reminded us of our youth. We wanted to revive the vibrant colors and patterns we remembered from our childhood on clothing that felt like wearing a cloud.

By focusing our designs for young girls, we decided to live vicariously through this endeavor as we don’t have any young girls of our own. After much deliberation, we came up with Ren, symbolizing love, and Rouge, red – expressing carefree energy of sorts.

And that’s how Ren and Rouge were born. Since then, we’ve been working hard through ups and downs, struggles and achievement, and an even busier schedule to make our dream become a reality.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It should come as no surprise that all entrepreneurial have their struggles, and our story is no different. Having to juggle full-time work and climbing the corporate ladder or being engaged in extracurricular activities and social work or raising well behaved and socially adept children is a challenge in and of itself. Imagine adding a whole business to that!

There has been a lot of challenges. We are figuring out the industry, making connections, thinking of concepts and designs, trying to stay authentic to our original memories while balancing functionality as well – to name a few.

But with every challenge, there’s also an opportunity to learn and grow. And we’ve certainly grown. As entrepreneurs, as partners, and even as moms. We now have a better perspective on what moms are looking for their kids.

We’ve grown closer with the community around us, and our business seeks to not only revive our memories and provide quality clothing but also to give back through it all!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Ren & Rouge – what should we know?
We specialize in making beautiful & authentic quality clothing for young girls.

We are known for our unique designs and patterns that remind us of a better time. We’re known for the quality of our cloth, which kids love snuggling.

We’re known for our authenticity, and all our customers can attest to the joy of putting our dresses on their kids and see them grow as vibrant as they remember their colorful youth.

We’re most proud of seeing the smiles on the faces of the kids and parents when they try on our dresses. The joy we get from seeing their happiness can be rivaled by the joy we feel when designing the dresses itself and letting our creativity run free.

We’re unique in that our clothing is a reflection of us. We’re not seeking to prioritize profit over quality. We’re not looking to cut corners when it comes to design and completely natural, pure fabrics.

And ultimately, we’re a unique family just like all our customers, and we’re trying to share that love. We don’t feel like we’ve succeeded until our customers fall in love with our clothing and their kids feel at home wearing them.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Our families and friends. Without their support and encouragement, we wouldn’t be able to do this. While we were busy working on our business, our spouse took care of our kids. That’s the most significant support of any working mom out there. Our kids also played such an essential role in this business. They were patient, understanding, and encouraging us every step of the way.
