Meet Priscilla Graham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Priscilla Graham.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My name is Priscilla T Graham.  I am the proud owner of Priscilla Graham Photography & Publishing.  I am a Georgia native and Gulf War Veteran.  After six years of service in the United States Army Signal Corps and graduating from Texas Southern University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting,  I embarked upon my current journey of changing lives that can change the world by providing opportunities and educational tools for young people to experience success.  My passion for servant leadership was born in 1994 at a juvenile justice conference in Austin, Texas where Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee said, “Too often when people need us the most, we give them our worst.” Servant leadership affords me the opportunity to give my best to those who need it the most.

I have over 20 years of progressive accomplishments in nonprofit management, donor cultivation, board development, fiscal management, program development, department and facility management driven by meaningful results and outcomes that positively impact the lives of men, women, and children.

In 2011, I opened and managed the first YMCA in the world to be named after a professional sports team, Houston Texans, and the first certified LEED Gold YMCA in the state of Texas. However, my love is storytelling through the Lens of the camera capturing timeless moments of life.  “Photography soothes my soul and gives me a voice to express my spirit of love for God’s Beauty through a single photograph.  I believe that nothing truly captures a moment in time like a photograph…”

My preferred genre of photography is documentary because I believe that “History is made and lives through people, not places, buildings, structures, organizations, or things.  These are merely vehicles one uses to make history.  It is through one’s actions that he or she creates his or her legacy and makes places, buildings, structures, organizations, or things touched along the way historical during a particular time and era.”

I fell in love with photography in 1995 when I discovered the power and impact of a single photograph. Photographs tell a story and reveal truths that cannot be reproduced or duplicated in any other form. A photograph simply captures a single moment in time and makes it stand still for eternity. I believe that photography can inform, educate, inspire, and help people develop pride and a love for learning when they acquire knowledge about historical people that look like them, places, and structures in their communities. In order to truly become the person, one is designed to be he or she must know his or her history of the past and embrace it to move forward and prosper in the future.

In December 2014, I completed my Master’s Degree in Business Administration.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road to owning a business has not been smooth.  Along the way, I have faced many struggles including but not limited to competition, creating the brand, continuous flow of capital, time, client base, and identifying the market niche.

However, I have been very fortunate.  I was able to use my saving to establish the brand and create a unique niche in the market of many.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am an American Documentary Photographer, Internationally Published Author, and Speaker who specializes in historical photo books of buildings, settlements, neighborhoods, and places that have been forgotten in history.  I research, explore, document, and create educational tools to help educate, inspire, and empower young people about history and Freedom Colonies established between 1865 and 1917.

Since beginning my journey, I have written, designed, and self-published 25 books available in 5 languages focusing on historical people, architecture, and land use.

I am responsible for the day to day operations, customer liaison, invoicing, accounts receivable and negotiating rates for fair customer pricing while balancing needs of the business.

I have been fortunate to complete photography and videography projects for a wide range of clients including Susan G. Komen, Page Girl Solutions 101, Bee Busy, Buffalo Soldiers Museum, Houston Sun Newspaper, Dmars.com, Houston Informer, Springfield College, Prairie View Volunteer Fire Department, Acres Homes Chamber of Commerce, 3rd Ward Steppers, E4 Success, Black Realtors, Greater Houston Frontiers, African American News & Issues, and Yates Museum.

Content creation, maintenance, and promotion of community-driven social media profiles on platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook are also components of day to day operations; however, the most exciting aspect of the business is conducting scheduled walking tours, speaking engagements, and exhibits.  In addition to my Acres Homes Community Exhibit, I had the pleasure of presenting my Heroes’ Exhibit Celebrating US Soldiers at the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum from June 24, 2019 through September 6, 2019.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is the fourth-largest city in the United States. There are plenty of opportunities for success in the photography business.  There are a wide variety of people and events occurring daily: however, you must have a niche to set you apart from other photographers.
