Meet Lucas Hughes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas Hughes.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lucas. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It’s hard to say when I first started acting but I tend to drift towards my first acting class at HCC (Houston Community College) around 3 1/2 years ago with Edward Muth. Before that class acting was never something I considered I do, let alone wanted to do or make a living at.

Previous to that class I was and still hold several Personal Training certifications and that is where I saw my future. I was aspiring to be a physical therapist or something in the fitness industry where I could help people. During and then after this class, I developed an appreciation for acting and slowly became the focus of what I wanted to be doing. I began taking more acting classes, reading books, writing my own scripts, watching interviews, studying different acting styles and just doing anything and everything I could to become a better actor.

Fast forward to present day and I am still acting but I consider myself more than just an actor. I have acted in various commercials, PSAs, short films, interactive experiences and just recently booked my first television speaking role. I teach, continue to write, and above all else tell a good story every chance I get.

I currently have two agents that work extremely hard in helping me with my career as well as guiding me and helping me grow and expand. My Texas agent Addie Eckert (Page Parkes Center of Modeling and Talent) and my Southeast region agent Kimberly Taylor (KTA Talent Group) are some of the most dedicated individuals I know and I am so great full for the opportunities I have received through them.

Outside of my own acting career, I teach classes multiple times a week where I help all ages of people. Most individuals who take my classes are those looking to become actors but I also teach people who are looking for a creative outlet, as well as others who are looking to learn a new skill that can translate to all aspects of life.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say it has been rough or smooth road it has been slower than I would like but about as fast as I would have expected. I definitely feel like I’ve put in my fair share or time and effort but I’ve also been extremely lucky to have been surrounded by some amazing people.

My fiancé Kaila Sawyer who has spent numerous last minute late nights or early mornings with me reading lines and preparing for auditions to the endless encouragement and motivation.

David Simpson who has not only been one of my best friends but also a mentor and someone that has always been there to answer a question, lend me an idea or simply just make sure I keep going.

The biggest struggles I’ve come across in my career are the same struggles every actor experiences. The film industry isn’t easily understood or doesn’t seem to make since at times. From the lack of feedback to what seems like endless waiting or to the times where you’ve felt like you’ve given the best performance possible only to not hear anything back. Every actor will tell you they’ve had the times where they were about to quit but all those thoughts seem to go away when you do receive the good news.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I tend to do a bit of everything. I write, direct, produce, act and teach. I constantly do my best to keep learning. I believe if you ever stop learning or progressing you’ve stopped living. I always have multiple books I’m reading at a time, I’m always watching new things and listening to podcasts. Basically, I’m doing everything I can to learn something new. I give out homework to my classes, watch something new. Don’t go back to the same reruns when you could turn on something new, there’s tons of art out there waiting to be discovered by you.

When I’m teaching or preparing to teach a class I’m always looking for ways to make it different. I want my classes to be engaging, thought-provoking, challenging and entertaining. I believe anyone can benefit from taking my classes whether you’re trying to be an actor or not.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think the characteristic that is the most important in my success has been my determination. I’ve always been the type of person to identify a challenge and go after it. This is an industry that is far from easy and that’s one of the things I love about it.

I’m determined to tell a good story that someone, somewhere is impacted by.
