Today we’d like to introduce you to Jhon Guarin.
Jhon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Soccer has always been part of my life since I was little. I started playing the game when he was eight years old in Medellin, Colombia for a local club that competed in the Pony Futbol Tournament. It all began because I suffered from asthma and the doctor recommended sport as a solution to improve my condition.
Thankfully I was able to play a full game without an Inhaler by the time I was eleven years old. I was thirteen when I moved from Colombia to Arlington, TX where I finished high school. I moved to Houston shortly after finishing high school and here is where I learned a lot about how soccer works in America. I was able to play semi-pro level for two years but an injury took me out of the game for eight months and I focused on finishing University and recovering. I graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Administration and a minor in Business Foundations. I started coaching soccer after the injury and became passionate about coaching kids. Eventually, it will lead me to open Radix Soccer Training with the purpose of teaching young players how to become better players by developing their soccer attributes. I have coached at different clubs and programs here in Houston and I plan to pursue professional coaching. Now I have the privilege to coach various teams at Juventus Academy Houston. I’m currently In charge of ages six, ten and fourteen years old where I spend my afternoons Monday-Friday.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been difficult due to all the compromises that I’ve had that limit my coaching time. I’m married and my wife is a full-time student at the University of Houston, I’ve been working full-time jobs plus part-time coaching in order to pay the bills and also gain more experience as a coach. I started Radix Soccer Training as an alternative for players to continue their development or learn on a one on one things that they are not learning where they are. Recently, I signed a contract with Juventus Academy Houston allowing me to have better financial stability and have been able to leave my full-time job in order to concentrate more on my goals. I’m blessed to be able to coach but for the past three years, I have endured a crazy routine. Work from 3 am-1 pm in logistics, get home a take a 2-hour nap. Go coach after 3 pm until 9:30 pm, get home and rest a few hours before doing it again. Physically it has been a struggle but I’m blessed to finally have a better schedule. I have the opportunity to coach for a club that I believe in and also have the opportunity to coach private sessions.
Radix Soccer Training – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in coaching One on One sessions. I offer a style of learning in which the player understands his/her weaknesses from the root. Working specifically on what they need and won’t get without proper training and understanding. I’m known for focusing on all five attributes of soccer with each player and allowing them to set reachable short and long term goals. I’m proud that I’m able to offer a service that focuses on quality and that each player gets their personalized training program that allows them to grow as a player in a shorter time.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I believe success is not a straight line, instead is a path one takes to reach a desirable goal that brings ups and downs. Determination is essential to being successful. I think success is not measured in dollars since you can be a very successful person yet still not be rich financially. I believe that If you are happy with your outcome you are successful.
