Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Haddock.
Michael, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started with Macy’s in 2009 while getting through culinary school. A few years after finishing school, I was recruited by Brooks Brothers tailored where I really found my niche in clothing. I was able to express my creativity through visual merchandising and client styling. I was asked to come back to Macy’s as a personal stylist about three years ago and I’ve been enjoying it ever since. I still use my culinary skills for personal enjoyment and entertaining purposes.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have definitely been challenges along the way. Learning a new role and building up a clientele base from scratch wasn’t the easiest. Even though I work for a major retailer, it’s almost a business within a business where you have to really put yourself out there and promote yourself. I had to learn to step out of my comfort zone and establish a growth mindset in order to find my approach to success.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am the personal shopper/stylist for Macy’s at the Baybrook Mall location. Macy’s Personal Stylist is a complimentary personal shopping service pairing customers with a dedicated lifestyle expert to support all aspects of the Macy’s shopping experience. The service takes customer service to the next level by offering a curated experience, tailored to each customer’s personal style, budget and need.
What makes me most proud about the role is making a difference in someone’s life. To some, it may not seem substantial but for me it’s about making someone feel confident about themselves, to like the reflection they see when they look in the mirror and feel great about it. For me to contribute to that feeling in any kind of way makes me feel proud.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Everyone around me deserves credit for what I do and where I am. From friends & family, colleagues, to clients that refer potential clients. To me success isn’t built solitarily, it takes a team. I consider everyone around me as teammates and I look to them for advice, positive and constructive feedback and motivation.
