Today we’d like to introduce you to Contressa Watts.
Contressa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started hanging in the kitchen when I was younger with my mom, Vanessa Watts Houston. Watching her prepare breakfast, lunch, dinner and something sweet which my sister and I could never wait for. We always got to lick the bowls and spoons once she was done inspired me to go further in life with baking, setting an amazing name for myself with something to leave behind for my children. Baking brings joy into my home the smell of old fashion bunt cakes, pies, cookies, brownies, cupcakes and banana puddings just makes us do the happy dance.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Although baking seems easy as some would say, it’s most defiantly not. Understanding the portions of what you need, measuring, keeping count of how many eggs you crack and every little twist if perfection you add for the best taste makes you sweat lol. Once you know and have that part down pack anything can be a perfect finish to let your customers know it was made with PERFECTION! You gonna run into those mishaps of baking. Wanting to know if this is the taste you love but your customers admire, my looks always keep you wondering if it tastes as well as the display I present. Of course, it does. It never means give up, it means to perfect your craft and follow through with your process. You are the face of your business and you want the people to love you and your product at all times. Especially if you’re a young black woman in this world today. I wake up every morning knowing I’m about to bless someone soul with my desserts and that confidence level is at an all-time high. Your business is in it to win it.
Keep your head up and positivity surroundings, your blessings will shower you.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kuntry Kakez – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The name of my business speaks for itself, “KuntryKakez” One day sitting home with my husband trying to figure out the perfect name was hard we hand so many different ones but he thought KuntryKakez was the perfect name for a city girl, with country ways. I figured why not bake desserts? People love sweet snacks after a good cooked meal and that’s where I come in at. From all types of cakes, pies, cupcakes, and cookies to brownies, different flavor banana puddings and flavored cheesecakes. I do it all. As my brand, I’m most proud of how far I’ve come with my customers. I could say it’s my desserts but it’s them. They keep me on my toes I’ve gotten some of the most outrageous baking ideas only from my customers. That’s what motivates me. Customers call me, tell me what’s on their minds and I master it. Hands down! I’ve been doing this three years and I love the feedback given from them. Never bad always motivation to perfect the taste they want which I most defiantly provide. My desserts at “I wonder if it tastes how it looks” These are the cakes and pies your granny makes! Did I mention I never had a complaint from pricing, desserts and delivery. I’m the “KakeLady”. I know what your mouth wants and desire for taste. Especially with my last-minute customers, who I love the most call me at any moment. That’s how you get the job done baby.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
My mother’s family was from San Augustine and a little small country town in East Texas. I mean people know when you visit family out of town it’s all about the food and love and my family can throw down on some good ole food but the desserts are beyond the thought of. Baby, that’s a master skill that can’t be taken away from my family. We go above and beyond with the sweets. I actually got started watching my little sister, Shay was always making cupcakes, cake pops and covered Oreos for gatherings was super fun but she isn’t the baker, lol. My late great grandmother Betty D. Watts had that perfect touch with sweet potato pie I mean her pies where deadly do you hear me. She would make four of these pies for any gathering or holiday. Two for the house one for my mom and cousin to take back to Houston. I’ve never tasted a pound and 7up cake so moist and sweet ever. My granny Betty Ruth has her own twist on pies. From lemon icebox pie to chocolate moose pies, I mean who doesn’t love chocolate, and I’m not talking about no pies from Luby’s. My mother makes the best cheesecake from the crust to the filling, is just mouth-watering. Then, we bring it home to Houston, where my father was born and raised. Stella Houston, my late grandma always held the sweetest spot in my heart. As a kid growing up, I was never interested in a store brought cake. Simply because every year, I knew my grandma was making me the biggest strawberry cake ever. I mastered that cake to a T. On top of her famous banana pudding. These where the gift that stuck with me and I cherish it all to pass down to my kids. It just gives my family a warm feeling to bake it brings life into your home and kitchen for family fun times and laughter and growing up that’s how it was. This is what got me here today and I love sharing this experience of having so many different flavors of dessert on so many tables all year long. I dearly thank my customers, because they make me, they make my business succeed. I love all my support systems for that. ❤
