Today we’d like to introduce you to Elly Berman.
Elly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up with a passion for horses. This passion turned into a family business when my parents, Ed and Ada Perwien built Bluebonnet Farm on picturesque rolling hills near Bellville, Texas nearly 30 years ago. Bluebonnet Farm offers a wide range of services including both riding and driving lessons, training, breeding and sales. We are dedicated to the beautiful and versatile American Saddlebred horse.
Over the years, I have had the good fortune to compete around the country with horses we bred and raised. Ed Perwien at 91 still competes in driving classes with his beloved horse iPod.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There is a lot involved with operating a horse farm. Luckily, we have great a team. Sandra Currier, our trainer has been with Bluebonnet Farm for some 20 years. She not only is responsible for training the horses, she is in charge of our breeding program, trailering the horses to shows in our big rig ,18 wheeler, and overseeing the day to day operations of the farm. Austin Hazelwood joined our team a year ago as assistant trainer and instructor. We also have quite a few grooms to take care of 30 horses in training.
I don’t know if you could call it a struggle but we bail our own hay at Bluebonnet Farm. It’s difficult figuring out the best time to cut hay so it has a couple of days do dry before bailing. Houston has unpredictable weather! Just the other day we got over 200 bails in 15 minutes before it rained.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Bluebonnet Farm – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
What makes me so proud of our farm is the champions we have produced. Horses that were born on the farm, raised in our pastures and then start their training eventually make it to the show ring. What sets us apart from others is that we pair this with giving riding lesson and training customer’s horses. The customers become part of our barn family.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
August is a busy time of year for us. Our World Championship horse takes place in Louisville Kentucky. Other shows throughout the year build up towards this grand event.
