Meet Jocelyn Gavin-Lane of Premier Professional Counseling Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jocelyn Gavin-Lane.

Jocelyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Bay Springs, MS. I am an only child and I have always been a lover of people. I graduated from Jackson State University in 2000 and 2003 with my degrees in Social Work (BSW & MSW)

I have been in the field of social work for almost 20 years. I started using vision boards many years ago to help me become clear on the goals that I wanted to accomplish in my personal life and in my career. There was a time in my life that I felt I had no direction and no plan. A good friend of mine encouraged me to do a vision board and I have been addicted to them ever since. As a mental health therapist, I know the importance of goal setting in all areas of your life. You have to develop a plan to your path of success. I enjoy bringing that experience to other women, especially entrepreneurs. I own a growing mental health practice in Gulfport, Mississippi however, I travel to host vision board events across the southeast.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth rode for me in business. I was literally trapped by fear when deciding to open a brick and mortar office. I had been working from home for a while but I knew in order to expand my business and my brand I had to put myself in a position to grow and win. I started Premier Professional Counseling Services in 2003 but opened my downtown office in 2017. It took a while but it was the best decision I ever made for my self and my career.

Imposter syndrome has been a huge barrier for me. It is a pattern in which an individual doubts their accomplishments. I had been doing that a long time in my personal life and in my career. I was constantly being told I was growing and doing a great job and but I struggled with if my best was good enough. I felt I needed a preverbal nod from others in my community who I perceived to be at the top of their game. I soon realized that I needed approval from no one and each barrier was an opportunity to create my own space to be successful in my own right.

Please tell us about Premier Professional Counseling Services.
Premier Professional Counseling Services is a full-service mental health agency. We specialize in using a wholistic and client-centered approach to help our clients live their best lives. Each year I host the Mississippi Minority Mental Health Symposium, bringing together mental health professionals and community leaders.

Just Jocelyn is my coaching, consulting, and speaking business. I specialize in vision boards, speaking on the stigma of mental health. I am known for my vision board parties and being a goal-setting guru!

I am most proud of my willingness to help others along in whatever stage of the journey they are in. It is important to have an accountability partner to help avoid distractions and curb the tendency to procrastinate.

I recently created a line of candles inspired by self-care and positive affirmations. My first two candles are – Today I Choose Me & I Am Beautiful. I love candles and I love positive affirmations. When we light candles, we are expecting something that calms us and is peaceful. I am integrating self-care affirmations into the names of the candles so you can light one according to your mood and what your self care.

What sets me apart from other therapists and coaches is that I am a firm believer in the value of self-care in all areas of your life. I enjoy women being able to see themselves grow the goals and dreams from infancy stages to rolling out successfully. Doing all that work can be draining and its imperative that we make time for self-care.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would be our bi-annual family reunions. My family is spread out all over the US. Thanks to my grandmother, she made sure that we all stayed in touch, knew each other, and built solid relationships. Had it not been for those family reunions, I probably wouldn’t know or be as close to my family members. For that, I am immensely grateful.
