Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Hammond.
Dana, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion was ignited in 2016 with a challenge to produce a pageant when I would go on and on about my niece being in a pageant. My sister Jennifer said, “Do a Pageant and she’ll be in one” so I did. I wanted the pageant to not only encourage the girls live for their physical being but also highlighting their talents, gifts and creativity. I produced the Be You Pageant In 2016 with 22 contestants and over 150 people in attendance it was amazing. Our host was Miss America 2013 Chaniqua Petteway. My passion took off from that point. Soon after, I began working with another Nonprofit organization that opened my eyes to how much can be done in the community in regards to our youth.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This road has not been an easy one it is a task daily to remain encouraged. Being a nonprofit founder, it is difficult to have so many plans and ideas for the community but lack the finances to do them all. How do I overcome this? I use what I have and call on volunteers and donors who have been there for me that believe in my vision for our youth. We just don’t quit.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Be You Kids – what should we know?
I am known as “Aunt Dana” by many because I try to show genuine love and affection towards all youth and making them know that they are special. My most recent accomplishment would be my book, “Be You, eight weeks of Self Love and Discovery”. And I have Journal #2 in the works, “Be You, 8 Attributes of You.” It is a short read and has received great reviews from several sources. It is available for purchase. I also am available to instruct the eight weeks sessions which I look forward to as there are interactive and class activities included. We also partner with Beyond Basketball TX in Anti-Bullying Advocacy as Self Esteem plays a role in victims and Bullies alike.
Our 2020 vision is 20/20. With many programs planned for our youth. Our programs include financial literacy, dance, theater arts, debate, cooking and STEM. We have volunteers in line and prepared to teach lead and mentor our youth. Our vision is for “Be You” kids activity center to be located on the north side of Houston providing a safe place and haven for our kid’s gifts talents and skills to be nurtured and grown. We are always welcoming sponsors and donors and volunteers.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
God gets all Glory, as He is the Giver of talents and gifts. I have a great support system thank you Lord. My husband, Kevin. My daughters Amariah, De’Marquisia and Jewel. I also have a Host of friends and family who cheer me on, I dare not name names lest I forget someone. Although I am a natural visionary, my family is always there for me to pitch ideas, get insight and “Red Light” my sometimes outlandish ideas.
