Meet Kayla & Brandon Dobmeier of The Dentists on Rayford in Spring

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla & Brandon Dobmeier.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kayla & Brandon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We both grew up in small towns in North Dakota and Minnesota to hard-working, midwestern parents. Our parents were all relentless in their attempts in teaching us a good work ethic and paying attention to details. We definitely got lucky that way, learning early on that to be a successful person you have to put in the hours and treat people well.

Fast forward through college, dental school, and getting married. The time came to decide where we would settle in. We had grown weary of the long winters in the northern states and were in search of a warmer home. For several years, we had already been planning details of our own dental practice. From supply lists to patient paperwork, we spent every possible second setting up our business. We self-taught ourselves marketing, bookkeeping, and even computer networking (we wired our entire office and set up our server/network ourselves!). We got to the Houston area as fast as we could and opened our practice in August of 2015.

We always knew we wanted to own our own business. Working in corporate dental offices and seeing how poorly patients were treated continued to inspire us to build a practice that we would be proud of running. We operate much differently than other dental offices. We meet all of our patients and learn about them before we ever start doing any dental work or x-rays. We truly have found a family in Spring and are very grateful to be serving such great families.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening a business is not for the faint of heart! Kayla is very organized and kept us out of most harm’s way, but there were certainly challenges along the way. Finding the perfect location was one of the hardest parts. We originally were negotiating a lease on another space when we were approached to look at our existing location. We began construction and midway through, our construction team tells us that our landlord forgot to request power to our location. So, we spent months of waiting and pleading with the utility company to run lines to get us power to our building. After opening, we had pretty significant water damage inside due to a hole in the roof.

As business-owners, we’ve now learned to expect these challenges on a regular basis and forge ahead.

The Dentists on Rayford – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are family-owned general dental practice and make every attempt to make it just that: like a family. We see people from infants to elderly and provide all the services you can think of, from fillings to veneers to dentures. We are most proud of the fact that we do very little marketing and rely mostly on referrals from our existing patients and word of mouth in the nearby communities. We know that it’s hard nowadays to find a trustworthy healthcare provider, so we’re proud that we provide good, honest service.

Neither of us are “salesmen” and don’t push unnecessary treatment on any of our patients. We plan on being in our office for a long time, so our focus is on our reputation and providing a good experience, not on big production numbers or the “bottom line.”

Actually, we daily go over each other’s charts and x-rays and provide “second opinions” to one another on our patients. We ask each other “what would you do here?” or “do you think we can get a good result with this procedure?” That’s a great benefit to our patients.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Our proudest moments cannot be summed in one experience. Rather, the proudest times are when people bring in their family members and trust us to take great care of them. A son bringing his 90-year old mother in and with pride and a smile telling her how much she’s going to love us, or new parents bringing their baby in for his first dental visit and trusting us with their most precious treasure – those are the proud moments.
