Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Conserve.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Cassandra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Currently I reside in Houston, Texas. I was born and raised in NY by Haitian Caribbean parents. Their expectations for me were like any other parent, finish high school, go to college, get excellent grades, become a doctor and live a happy life! The American Dream, that was their definition of success. I received my degree in biology and decided not to continue in the medical field as I completely lost all interest in what I thought was my passion. After graduating, I researched what careers required a biology degree and that is when I came across Cosmetic Chemistry.
A couple of years after the start of my career, I started my natural hair journey. I cut off all my hair and started fresh. During this process, I became a huge product junkie in search of something that would work for my hair. Can you believe it, Nothing! Nothing worked. Everything made my hair dry or brittle, there was not a product that would give my hair life I decided to produce my own products just so I can get my hair back to how it was when I was a little girl, vibrant and healthy. Using my science background in conjunction with my experience in research and development lab, I gained an abundance of knowledge of how to formulate for myself. My family and friends were my guinea pigs and they supported this new venture. I thought to myself, if my hair loves it (thick, coarse and curly) then others might find it beneficial as well. With my loved one’s support and push, I created Carmelle Essence. I am continuously learning how to run a business and how to perfect my craft every day. As I continue to grow, my mission is to eventually use my company to give back to the children of Haiti. Providing funds for schooling, education and so much more! Eventually I want to teach little girls with textured hair to embrace their curls and kinky strands!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I wish I could say it has been a smooth road, but no, it hasn’t. From the start of registering your business to doing research on your specific business, seeking mentorship, networking, marketing, creating a website, tending to customers. Starting a business as well as working a 9 to 5 has not been easy. I’ve realized the importance of setting a schedule for yourself and finding the proper balance. While it will still be stressful and at times overwhelming, doing this will relieve some of the stress. Commitment is key. The same way you rise and tend to your job is the same way you must commit to your business. After work, I would advise setting an hour to unwind. Set another hour or so dedicated to doing research, whether it is online or reading a book. Use the rest of the time to promote and grow your business; however, you see fit. There are also organizations such as SBA.gov (Small Business Administration) that can provide you with a plethora of resources and information. They also have a women’s division (WBEA) that serves women*owned businesses in 94 Texas Counties. Research, Patience, consistency and stepping out of your comfort zone are very important.
Tell us more about your work. What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a Cosmetic Chemist specializing in hair-care and skincare. I have started my own line of hair-care that will eventually expand into skincare and makeup. Along with being able to create my own line of cosmetics, I am also a formulation consultant. I help others who also have a dream of starting their own line of products.
I started my brand using my knowledge of formulating. I can create a product with my own two hands, knowing it will work for my targeted consumers. It feels great to be able to have that control and provide an amazing finished product.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
“Rich Dad, Poor Dad” is a great book that provides a better understanding of financial literacy and how to make money work for you. I believe that’s a great book to read when starting a business or just in general. I’m often browsingwww.chemistcorner.com
