Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen and Nicole Goff.
Stephen and Nicole, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My wife and I first started to flirt with the idea of becoming realtors eight years ago when we purchased our first home in Los Angeles. We bought the house in 2011 and got married a year later. At the time, the housing market was slowly climbing out of the 2008 recession. We accomplished what seemed to be impossible for a young black couple in LA at the time. I can remember watching HGTV 24/7 as we remodeled our home. Our favorite show was “Flip or Flop”. It was about a young husband and wife team fixing and flipping houses in California. In the back of my mind, I knew we could be just like them. In late 2013 we sold our house for a huge profit and both transferred our airport jobs from LAX to IAH Houston, TX. The cost of living in Los Angeles was getting out of control so it was an easy decision to move to Houston. Our first house was essentially a “live in house flip.” We bought our second home in Houston which was twice the size of our first house and a fraction of the price. After being apart of both sides of a real estate transaction it was clear that we wanted to help others become homeowners like us.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has had some challenges as my wife ended up pregnant within a few months of obtaining her license. We did not have a lot of family here to help so she stayed home with our daughter a little over a year. Then two years later, she became pregnant with our youngest daughter. It was difficult to run the business with two kids and part-time job, so she quit the part-time job and put both kids into daycare full-time so she was able to give real estate 100% of her time.
The Goff Team – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As realtors, we help our clients buy, sell, lease and invest in real estate. We specialize in first time home buyers and expired listings. We are known for our great communication and professionalism. As a husband-wife team, we can tailor ourselves to fit in with our customers’ preferences. We like to say they get two agents instead of just one. You always have one of us available to assist, which is how we got our motto, #betteroffwithgoff. As a company, we are most proud of being able to be so young and successful all while still raising our girls and being able to make time for our family.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Our definition of success has changed over the years. In our mid-twenties, success to us meant having a nice luxury car, attending concerts, and being able to vacation out of the country a few times a year. When we became realtors and parents in our early thirties, being successful took on a whole different meaning. Success now means leaving a legacy for our daughters. We were both the first to go to college in our family and the first to own our own homes. Ownership, especially in Real Estate is the fastest way we believe to begin generational wealth. At the end of the day, if we don’t have a business and several real estate properties to pass on to our daughters then we were not successful.
