Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Nguyen.
Tony, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my career off as a graphic designer coming out of high school. Wanting to build my own clothing line from scratched but things led to another and started to sway a different path by a videographer by the name of Andy To. He opened my eyes to how beautiful life really is if you just look a little closer. His travel photography and videography really hit that desire of mine to travel because growing up I didn’t get a lot of opportunities to travel as my parents worked a lot, but since that day I picked up a camera and just started shooting pictures with only YouTube as my source of education for this medium. Currently, I never saw myself doing music videos, all to the thanks of my buddy Chris Salazar. He was my first music video client when he reached out to me in need of help.
At the time, I didn’t have any knowledge on how to shoot video but through trial and error, I am now getting more rappers than ever that are wanting to do music videos with me and its honestly one the most exciting feelings and I encourage young videographers to try and shoot one. However throughout the years, I have run into some great artsy friends that have helped me improve myself as an artist. I’m currently working with them under a start-up company called Redefining Creations where we shoot short films, advertisements, music videos, and photography. So the future is bright but I just gotta continue and pave the way to success. Houston if we all come together as artist, the sky is the limit, we can keep art here instead leaving to find opportunities.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would say that I am progressing and improving as an artist but of course there were bumps in the road. I’m sure all artist lose motivation at times and can’t seem to get things going but with my experience you just have to keep on pushing and live by the definition of insanity which is doing something over and over like a mad man. Also, technical issue and lack of knowledge was huge in which was necessary for my success now. Failing is the only way to improve.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Tony’s Photography/Videography story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a freelancer that specializes in portrait photography and shoot music videos for local Houston artist. I work with my team by the name of redefining creations and we shoot short films, advertisements, music videos and photography. I have helped on short film sets as a grip, photographer, camera operator and soon to be assistant director for my colleagues upcoming short film called choices. What I am the most proud of as apart of the redefining creations team is the hunger for success and the atmosphere that surrounds us. As a team we push each other to become better a whole to tackle situations and create art. what sets me apart from others is my hard work and dedication to the art of creating in which I cut out video games and other things that will prevent me from getting to where I want to be.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I feel like luck has given me clients but at the same time, it’s all hard work and improving my skills of photography and video.
