Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucinda and Jody Goode.
Lucinda and Jody, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We have always been entrepreneurs. Shortly after our marriage 15 years ago, we started our first business which was a promotional marketing company. AABC (Action America Brandishing Company) Promotions which specialized in graphic design and printed products. Shortly thereafter, we opened our coffee shop; Java Joe’s in Huffman, where we not only served specialty coffee drinks, breakfast and lunch, but also continued our promotional printing business at that same location, while Jody also worked for an airline at IAH. Java Joe’s also had an annex inside Hargrave High School where we sold frozen coffee drinks exclusively.
We were very busy people to say the least and I should also mention that we were also raising our seven children. Our youngest; Gabriel, was born with end stage renal disease and required regular trips to Texas Children’s Hospital for dialysis. Gabriel touched more lives than any of the rest of us could ever aspire to, survived multiple surgeries and hospital stays, but succumbed to an infection at the age of ten in 2003. Today, our surviving six children are all hard working, driven adults who have blessed us greatly with eight beautiful grandchildren.
We have been successful in many ways, and certainly had to survive some trying times, but all-in-all have no regrets for the journey. The missing piece for us was our inability to actually change other people’s lives for better. We could employ a handful of people and serve our community, but we knew there had to be a way to do more. Our hearts desire has always been to reach millions of people in some way and actually enrich their lives in some way. We always carried a vision of teaching others to become entrepreneurs themselves and to help them fulfill their own visions. We had reached a point where we asked ourselves how many T-Shirts would we have to print and how many cappuccinos and hamburgers would we have to serve to achieve our ultimate goal.
While we continued to work as hard as we could, we knew we were at an impasse. A brick-and-mortar business would never allow us to achieve our dream because of the limits it imposes. Mainly limited reach, but also the need to prepare for down times and maintain inventory, not to mention unexpected maintenance requirements. We salute those people who build successful brick-and-mortar businesses, but for us it was an anchor that we knew had to be raised if we were to fill our sails.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I do not think any entrepreneurial journey is typical. Every entrepreneur faces their own challenges and wakes up every morning wondering what new difficulty they will be met with. This is the mystery of the entrepreneurial spirit, that a person will face setback after setback and potentially years without profit to hopefully become independent and not have to rely on the old 40 hours a week for 40 years plan where they do all the hard labor to make some executives rich. That is a true pyramid scheme where a few at the top become millionaires while the others are allowed to be paid enough to keep them coming back every day for that paycheck at the end of the week.
The entrepreneur must be driven by their own steam. We make those “executive” decisions. We determine our own fate.
Our road to success has been one of countless hours of very real knuckle-busting hard work with very little sleep and more setbacks than I care to elaborate on. We have learned the art of filling the potholes on this road rather than avoiding them day after day, but always being open to take a new route.
Essential Oils Guru – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
In March of 2013, we were introduced to doTERRA Essential Oils and Essential Oils Guru was born. We had used what we thought were good essential oils for several years, but we knew doTERRA Essential Oils were in a completely different class. We instantly knew that we had found something that would change our lives though we did not know to what extent.
My initial thought was that we would be able to take control of our own health needs and maybe introduce a few family members to do the same, but within a year we had realized the grand scope of what had become our true calling. We sold all of our printing equipment and were laser focused on building our essential oils business.
Today we have team members in several countries around the world and we teach them to build their own businesses via the internet. We teach a weekly Facebook live class on our group page Oils Guru. We record that and post it on our YouTube channel Essential Oils Guru. We also update all of our team members regularly through email with necessary information, specials, events, and ways to grow their businesses via essentialoilsguru.com
Our philosophy is that we are here to teach others not only how to use essential oils for their personal healthcare, but also how to build their own business with doTERRA if they choose to. We recognize those who have that entrepreneurial spirit I talked about and show them how to take their business to the next level, then the next.
Our Essential Oils are the purest on the market, grown in their indigenous countries where the climate, soil, and altitude are best for producing the desired constituents free from chemical enhancement. Growers and harvesters are paid throughout the growing season and doTERRA is present in those areas that have historically been poverty stricken to build schools, wells, homes, etc. Specific extraction methods are used to protect the integrity of the product without ever using chemicals. One of the things that set us apart is our third party testing on all our oils and a website called sourcetoyou.com you can go there with the lot number on the bottom of every essential oil bottle and see the purity for yourself. Our ever-expanding product line consists of essential oils and blends, essential oil based personal and household cleansers, dietary supplements and much more.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Every day we are proud to be helping others reach their goals physically and financially. We have seen these essential oils change so many lives for better we need no further encouragement to press on.
